Munich Security Conference Chief Expresses Shock and Condolences after Suspected Attack
A suspected attack in Munich has left the Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, deeply shaken and sympathetic towards the victims.
In an interview with Bavarian broadcaster Bayern 2, Heusgen conveyed his dismay and sorrow over the incident. "We are in shock. Our thoughts are with the numerous victims, including the injured and critically wounded. We sincerely hope for their speedy recovery," he said.
According to police reports, the incident on Thursday left 30 people injured, some with severe injuries. The suspect, identified as a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, initially trailed the demonstration behind a police vehicle tasked with securing the event. He then suddenly accelerated, overtaking the police car and plowing his vehicle into the end of the demonstration procession, where families with children were present.
The police responded swiftly, firing at the suspect and apprehending him. The demonstration had been organized by the German trade union Verdi as part of a series of warning strikes in the public sector. Police estimated approximately 1,500 people were participating in the march towards the final rally at Königsplatz when the car careered into the crowd.

Heusgen expressed profound sympathy and support for the victims and their families. "The Munich Security Conference stands in solidarity with those affected by this heinous act. We offer our unwavering support and assistance during this trying time," he emphasized.

In the wake of the attack, Heusgen appealed for unity and resilience within the community. "We must not allow such acts of terror to divide us or diminish our commitment to dialogue and peaceful coexistence," he urged.
He stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of all citizens and addressing the root causes of extremism and violence. "We must work together to build a society that is inclusive, tolerant, and free from fear," he concluded.
