Parents of Missing University of Pittsburgh Student Accept Presumed Death, Acknowledge Authorities’ Efforts

The parents of Sudiksha Konanki, the University of Pittsburgh student who vanished in the Dominican Republic on March 6, have publicly addressed the tragic circumstances surrounding their daughter’s disappearance. Their statement follows their decision to request Dominican authorities to declare Sudiksha deceased, a devastating acknowledgement of the likely outcome after weeks of searching and investigation.

Subbarayudu Konanki, Sudiksha’s father, spoke to reporters on Tuesday, expressing the immense difficulty in processing the loss. He revealed that they had formally communicated their wishes to La Policia Nacional, the Dominican national police force, on Monday. The authorities have concluded that Sudiksha is believed to have drowned after swimming in the ocean.

Mr. Konanki emphasized that both Dominican and local authorities had provided the family with information detailing the dangerous ocean conditions at the time of the incident. He added, "Both sides of the authorities have shown us how high the ocean waves were at the time of the incident." This detail underscored the perilous environment that likely contributed to the tragedy.

Sudiksha Konanki, a bright and ambitious 20-year-old, was reported missing from the resort in Punta Cana where she was vacationing. Investigations revealed that she had entered the water with Joshua Riibe, a 22-year-old fellow hotel guest from Iowa, during a red-flag warning, indicating hazardous swimming conditions. Riibe is considered a key witness in Konanki’s disappearance, but authorities have clarified he is not a suspect or a person of interest in the case.

Subbarayudu Konanki poignantly expressed the family’s grief, stating, "It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we are coming to the terms with the fact that our daughter is gone." The statement reflects the agonizing acceptance of a parent facing the unimaginable loss of a child.

The narrative surrounding Sudiksha’s final moments has been pieced together through witness accounts and investigative findings. According to a translated transcript of Joshua Riibe’s interview with Dominican police, which was shared with Fox News, the two were caught in a powerful wave while swimming.

Riibe recounted that he attempted to assist Sudiksha when the wave crashed over them. He last saw her wading in knee-deep water before he began vomiting seawater. Presuming she had returned to the hotel, Riibe fell asleep in a beach chair before eventually making his way back to his room. Hotel surveillance footage confirms Riibe’s return to his room around 9 a.m. on March 6.

Despite the clarity regarding his movements, Riibe’s involvement as the last known person to be with Sudiksha has placed him at the center of the investigation. Subbarayudu Konanki acknowledged the complexity of the situation, reiterating that police had clarified that Riibe is not considered a suspect.

The family’s focus now shifts towards honoring Sudiksha’s memory and finding solace in their faith. "Keep our daughter in your prayers," Mr. Konanki urged, adding that he and his wife have other children who require their care as they navigate this profoundly difficult period and "try to move on."

He spoke with pride about Sudiksha’s academic aspirations, noting that she was "very bright" and passionate about pursuing a career in medicine. Her enrollment in pre-med at the University of Pittsburgh reflected her dedication to realizing her ambitions.

The Konanki family has placed their trust in the ongoing investigation. Subbarayudu Konanki stated that he and his wife believe in the authorities "100%."

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia, where the Konanki family resides, issued a statement echoing the family’s belief that Sudiksha drowned. The Sheriff’s Office stated that while the final decision to declare Sudiksha deceased rests with Dominican authorities, they would support the Konanki family in every way possible. They will continue to review the evidence and information gathered throughout the investigation.

Meanwhile, Joshua Riibe faced his own legal challenges in the Dominican Republic. He had been required to remain in the country, and his passport had been confiscated since March 6. His family described his continued presence as "irregular."

Riibe sought legal recourse through a writ of habeas corpus, challenging the Dominican Republic’s decision to hold him. A judge ruled in his favor, agreeing that he had been unlawfully detained. A subsequent hearing is scheduled for March 28 to determine when he can depart from the Dominican Republic.

Riibe, a senior at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, has not been accused of any crime but remains a crucial witness in the investigation. He had been under surveillance at the resort since Sudiksha was reported missing.

The tragic disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki has prompted an outpouring of sympathy and support for her family. The collaborative efforts of Dominican authorities and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office demonstrate a commitment to uncovering the truth surrounding this heartbreaking event. As the Konanki family begins the arduous process of grieving, they hope that Sudiksha’s memory will serve as a reminder of the preciousness of life and the importance of cherishing every moment.
