Melissa Rivers Finds Love and Joy Amidst Loss, Marries Attorney Steve Mitchel in Wyoming Wedding

Television personality Melissa Rivers, daughter of the iconic comedian Joan Rivers, has embarked on a new chapter in her life, exchanging vows with attorney Steve Mitchel in a heartfelt ceremony held in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The wedding, a joyous occasion filled with love and laughter, came after a period of immense personal challenges for the couple, including the devastating loss of their home in the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year.

The journey to the altar was not without its hurdles. The wildfires, which ravaged Southern California, forced Rivers and Mitchel to abruptly evacuate their home in January, relocating multiple times before finding refuge at a friend’s property. The emotional toll of the experience left Rivers questioning whether the wedding could proceed as planned.

"I was tapping out, like I just can’t do this," Rivers shared with People magazine, revealing the overwhelming sense of despair she felt in the face of such loss.

However, it was the unwavering support of her friends that ultimately reignited her spirit. They rallied around her, reminding her of the importance of celebrating life and love, especially during times of adversity. Many of the guests themselves had also lost their homes in the wildfires, and the wedding became a beacon of hope, a reminder that joy and connection could still be found amidst the ashes.

"That’s when my friends stepped in and said, ‘We are doing this.’ Because a number of people who are coming lost their homes too, and they were like, ‘Thank God we have this to look forward to,’" Rivers recounted.

The wildfires brought the couple closer together, forging a bond of resilience and understanding. In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty, they discovered a shared ability to navigate crises as a team.

"It’s very comforting to find out you do crisis so well together," Rivers told People.

During their temporary stay at a friend’s house, Rivers and Mitchel decided to hold a mock wedding ceremony, exchanging vows and rings in a moment of profound intimacy.

"We were staying in the guest room at our friends house, and Melissa came with the idea of let’s exchange our rings," Mitchel explained. "She said, let’s just do our vows right here. At first, I thought it was silly, but we did it, and it just brought us so close."

The couple cherished the memory of that impromptu ceremony, even wearing their rings for a few days before carefully placing them back in their box, awaiting the real wedding day.

Despite the initial setbacks, the wedding proceeded flawlessly, with approximately 150 guests in attendance. The ceremony was a celebration of love, friendship, and the enduring power of the human spirit.

"It’s really something that I needed at a time in my life where everything felt like it had been taken away again," Rivers reflected, emphasizing the profound impact of the nuptials on her emotional well-being.

In addition to celebrating their love, Rivers made sure to incorporate special touches to honor her late mother, Joan Rivers. Guests received petite golden bee pins, a tribute to Joan’s favorite animal and a symbol of her inspiration.

"When we were planning it, our goal was simple: throw a party and have a wedding ceremony break out somewhere in the middle," Rivers shared. "And you know what? We nailed it. People were meeting, laughing, and by the end of the night, strangers were acting like old friends."

The wedding marked Rivers’ second marriage. She was previously married to John Endicott from 1998 to 2003, with whom she shares a son. Rivers and Mitchel met at a Didi Hirsch Mental Health and Suicide Prevention event and became engaged in 2023.

The wedding of Melissa Rivers and Steve Mitchel serves as a testament to the transformative power of love, the unwavering support of friendship, and the ability to find joy even in the face of adversity. It is a reminder that life’s challenges can strengthen bonds, and that hope can emerge from the ashes of loss. The couple’s journey, marked by both heartache and celebration, inspires us to cherish our loved ones and to find strength within ourselves to overcome any obstacle. Their story is a beautiful reminder that love can conquer all, and that even in the darkest of times, there is always light to be found.
