Nuremberg Stadium Redevelopment Faces Cost Cap
The redevelopment of Max-Morlock-Stadion, home to 2. Bundesliga football club 1. FC Nuremberg, is facing a cost cap after soaring estimates for the project. This is a joint decision between the SPD and CSU factions of the Nuremberg City Council.
The original plan, which included a new athletics track, had a budget of €290 million, with the city contributing €30 million. However, the CSU estimates that the project could now cost over €300 million.
In light of the increased costs, the fans have expressed their desire for a stadium without an athletics track, while the FCN management emphasizes the need for a competitive Bundesliga-level arena. The city, on the other hand, considers further renovation of the old stadium to be economically unviable.
"Our goals remain unchanged, but we must acknowledge the financial constraints and re-evaluate any additional elements," said Nasser Ahmed, chairman of the Nuremberg SPD. "We will continue planning with a fixed financial limit."
By the summer, the factions, along with planners and the FCN, aim to determine the available financial resources and the extent of the redevelopment possible within those limits. The goal is to submit a resolution for the stadium’s reconstruction to the City Council by 2025.
"We must find a financially feasible solution that meets the needs of the fans, the club, and the city," stressed Andreas Krieglstein, chairman of the CSU city council group.
The June 2022 resolution by the Nuremberg City Council approved further planning for a complete overhaul of the aging stadium. Despite the increased costs, the factions remain committed to the redevelopment project.
