A technical malfunction at network operator NetCologne caused widespread internet and phone outages for customers in the Rhineland region of Germany for several hours on Wednesday.
Outage Duration and Impact
The outage began at 9:00 AM and affected almost the entire NetCologne network until it was resolved at 5:15 PM. During this time, customers experienced disruptions to both internet and phone services.
The outage primarily impacted landline internet services, with a significant spike in reported issues on the website allestörungen.de during the peak period between 9:21 AM and 9:35 AM. During this 14-minute window, there were 4,488 reported outages, compared to a typical average of only four outages for NetCologne in a similar timeframe.
The outage affected areas throughout the Rhineland region, including major cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bonn, and Aachen, where NetCologne operates through its subsidiary NetAachen.
Emergency Services Impact
The network outage also had consequences for emergency service accessibility. The Cologne Fire Department reported that the emergency numbers 112 and 110 were inaccessible via NetCologne’s network within the Cologne city limits. Affected individuals were advised to use the networks of other providers or the NORA emergency app.
Similarly, in the Düren district, emergency calls via NetCologne or NetAachen networks were not reachable.
Affected Organizations
Cologne Bonn Airport, which is a NetCologne customer, was also impacted by the outage. However, airport operations were not significantly affected thanks to backup systems.
Resolution and Cause
The technical issue was eventually resolved by NetCologne in the afternoon. The company confirmed that all services had been restored by 5:15 PM.
The cause of the outage has not yet been officially disclosed by NetCologne.
