Maryland Lawsuit Targets Glock Over Role in Gun Violence

Introduction

In a bold move to curb gun violence, Maryland Attorney General Antony G. Brown and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott have filed a lawsuit against gun manufacturer Glock, Inc. The lawsuit alleges that Glock’s negligent actions have contributed to the proliferation of illegal machine guns on Maryland streets, posing a grave threat to public safety.

Glock’s Alleged Negligence

The lawsuit accuses Glock of manufacturing and selling semi-automatic handguns that can be easily converted into illegal machine guns using a cheap device known as a "Glock Switch." These modified weapons pose a significant danger due to their rapid-fire capabilities, similar to those of military-grade firearms.

The plaintiffs allege that Glock knew or should have known about the potential for its handguns to be modified for illegal use but failed to take adequate steps to prevent it. This negligence, they argue, has directly contributed to the spike in gun violence in Maryland.

The Gun Industry Accountability Act

Maryland’s lawsuit is the first to utilize the state’s recently enacted Gun Industry Accountability Act. This law empowers the government to hold firearm industry members accountable for contributing to gun violence through their sales, manufacturing, or marketing practices.

Evidence of Glock’s Role

According to the lawsuit, an alarming number of Glock pistols have been recovered at crime scenes in Maryland, many equipped with Glock Switches. In just two years, over 100 such illegally modified weapons were seized by Baltimore police. This evidence suggests a clear link between Glock’s negligence and the proliferation of gun violence.

The Plaintiffs’ Demands

The plaintiffs seek an injunction prohibiting Glock from continuing to sell easily modifiable pistols in Maryland. They also demand restitution for the harm caused by Glock’s actions and abatement measures to prevent future gun violence.

Statement from Attorney General Brown

"We will not allow the gun industry to turn a blind eye to grieving families and pursue profit over people’s lives. This case shows that our Office will hold members of the firearms industry accountable for their role in the gun violence epidemic," said Attorney General Brown.

Statement from Mayor Scott

"Confronting the epidemic of gun violence in our communities means holding everyone responsible, from those pulling the trigger to those making it easier to access — and modify — weapons," said Mayor Scott.

Conclusion

This lawsuit represents a significant step in addressing the root causes of gun violence in Maryland. By holding Glock accountable for its negligence, the plaintiffs aim to reduce the availability of dangerous weapons and create a safer environment for Maryland residents. The outcome of this case will have implications for the entire gun industry, as it sets a precedent for the potential liability of manufacturers in the face of preventable gun violence.
