Seventeen Arrests Made in Martinique Police Operation Targeting Anti-Inflation Violence

Case-Pilote, Martinique, February 21, 2023 – Seventeen individuals were apprehended on Tuesday during a major police operation in Case-Pilote, Martinique. The suspects are alleged to have participated in violent demonstrations that occurred on the island in October last year, amidst protests against the rising cost of living, the gendarmerie announced on Friday.

Operation Details

The operation, carried out in the commune located northwest of Fort-de-France, involved 190 gendarmes. During the raid, one firearm and ammunition were seized, according to a gendarmerie statement.

The arrested individuals, ranging in age from 17 to 44, are suspected of erecting barricades on the national road traversing the commune, rendering it "virtually impassable," the gendarmerie reported. They are also accused of attacking the premises of the Case-Pilote gendarmerie brigade and "the residences of military families" with "Molotov cocktails, fireworks mortars," glass bottles, and stones.

Legal Proceedings

Following their detention, 14 adults were presented before a judge. The juvenile arrested was "summoned before a juvenile court," the gendarmerie stated. Seven individuals have already been convicted in proceedings involving an admission of guilt (CRPC) and sentenced to "significant prison sentences suspended or house arrest" with electronic ankle monitors, fines, or community service, "close to 300 hours," the gendarmerie added, without specifying the precise duration of the prison terms.

The remaining seven individuals will stand trial "very soon" before the criminal court for property damage, collective violence against public authority figures, or obstruction of traffic, according to the statement. While awaiting trial, one of the accused has been placed in pre-trial detention, and the other six are under judicial supervision.

Background

In September and October of last year, riots erupted in Martinique amid protests against the rising cost of living. Foodstuffs in Martinique are, on average, 40% more expensive than in mainland France.

Reactions

The gendarmerie’s operation has been met with mixed reactions. Some residents have expressed gratitude for the arrests, hoping that they will deter future violence and restore a sense of security in the community. Others have questioned the necessity of such a large-scale operation, arguing that it could further escalate tensions and alienate the local population.

Underlying Socioeconomic Issues

The anti-inflation protests in Martinique highlight the severe economic hardships faced by many residents. The island is burdened by high unemployment rates and a lack of affordable housing. The rising cost of living has only exacerbated these challenges, leading to widespread frustration and anger.

Call for Dialogue and Resolution

Local leaders and community activists have called for dialogue and cooperation between protesters and authorities. They emphasize the need to address the underlying socioeconomic issues that have fueled the unrest. Only through open communication and constructive engagement can Martinique find lasting solutions to the problems that have plagued the island.
