Dortmund Appoints Markus Högner as New Women’s Football Coach
Borussia Dortmund has announced the appointment of Markus Högner as head coach of their women’s football team, effective from July 1, 2023. Högner will take over from Thomas Sulewski, who will transition to the role of youth coordinator for the BVB women.
Högner brings a wealth of experience to Dortmund, having coached Frauen-Bundesliga side SGS Essen since 2019. Under his guidance, Essen finished eighth in the 2021-22 season and currently sit ninth in the current campaign.
"We are delighted to have secured the services of Markus Högner," said Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl. "He has proven his ability to develop and motivate players, and his experience in the Frauen-Bundesliga will be invaluable for us as we strive to establish ourselves as a top team in Germany."
Dortmund’s women’s team is currently competing in the fourth-tier Westfalenliga, but the club has ambitious plans to climb the ranks and challenge for titles. Högner will be tasked with leading this charge, and he has expressed his excitement at the opportunity.
"I am thrilled to join Borussia Dortmund and contribute to the club’s ambitious plans for its women’s football program," said Högner. "The club has a rich history and a passionate fanbase, and I am eager to help build a successful future for the women’s team."
Högner’s arrival at Dortmund marks a significant step in the club’s commitment to developing women’s football. The appointment of such an experienced and successful coach demonstrates the club’s belief in the potential of its women’s team and its desire to achieve success at the highest level.
Sulewski, who has been in charge of Dortmund’s women’s team since 2019, has played a key role in the team’s progress. Under his leadership, the team won promotion to the Westfalenliga and has made a strong start to the current season.
"I am proud of what we have achieved with the team over the past few years," said Sulewski. "I am now looking forward to taking on a new challenge as youth coordinator and helping to develop the next generation of BVB women’s players."
Dortmund’s women’s team has a rich history, dating back to the 1970s. The club has won several regional titles and has reached the semi-finals of the German Cup on two occasions. In recent years, the club has focused on developing its youth system, and it is now home to one of the most talented groups of young female players in Germany.
With Högner at the helm and Sulewski working closely with the youth setup, Dortmund is well-positioned to challenge for titles and establish itself as a force to be reckoned with in German women’s football.
