Ludwigslust’s Damaged Equestrian Statue Restored: Alexandrine Returns in April

Repaired Bronze Statue "Equestrian Alexandrine" to Return to Ludwigslust City Center

The "Equestrian Alexandrine" bronze statue, damaged in an accident, has been repaired and is set to return to its original location in the Ludwigslust city center in April. The exact date has not yet been announced by the city administration.

The life-sized statue was knocked over by a man in May of last year. The driver reportedly drove straight over the roundabout where the equestrian monument stood. According to police, the man was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The damage was estimated to be around 110,000 euros.

In recent months, the statue has undergone repairs at an art foundry in Elchingen near Ulm.

History and Significance of the "Equestrian Alexandrine"

The "Equestrian Alexandrine" was erected in 2003. It is a work of art created by sculptors Andreas Krämmer and Holger Lassen, depicting the Prussian princess and later Grand Duchess Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1803-1892).

Alexandrine resided in Ludwigslust Castle between her marriage in 1822 and the accession to the throne of her Mecklenburgian husband, Paul Friedrich, in 1837. The court later relocated to Schwerin.

Details of the Accident and Repairs

The accident occurred on May 13, 2023, at around 5:30 am. A 38-year-old man driving a BMW X5 drove straight over the roundabout on Schloßstraße, where the statue was located. The impact caused significant damage to the statue’s right rear leg and foot.

The statue was subsequently transported to an art foundry in Elchingen, near Ulm, for repairs. The restoration process involved removing the damaged parts, creating new casts, and reassembling the statue.

Artistic and Historical Value of the Statue

The "Equestrian Alexandrine" is not only an iconic landmark in Ludwigslust but also a significant work of art. Krämmer and Lassen’s sculpture captures the essence of Alexandrine’s role and legacy in Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

The statue’s return to the city center is a testament to the community’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. The restoration efforts have ensured that future generations can continue to appreciate the beauty and historical significance of this beloved monument.

Public Reaction and Anticipated Impact

The news of the statue’s repair and impending return has been met with enthusiasm by the Ludwigslust community. Many residents have expressed their eagerness to see the familiar landmark restored to its former glory.

The statue’s return is expected to have a positive impact on tourism and civic pride. It will serve as a reminder of the city’s rich history and contribute to its cultural vitality.
