Light The Night: A Beacon of Hope in the Fight Against Blood Cancer

When cancer enters a life, it often casts a long shadow of isolation and fear. But amidst the darkness, a different kind of light emerges – a light fueled by community, strength, and unwavering hope. This light shines brightly through The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and their powerful event series, Light The Night.

Light The Night is more than just a walk; it’s a gathering, a celebration, and a testament to the human spirit’s resilience. It provides patients, survivors, and their loved ones a space to connect, to feel empowered, and to find solace in a shared journey. As dusk settles, participants carry glowing lanterns, illuminating the path toward a world without blood cancers. These lanterns are not just sources of light; they are symbols of unity, remembrance, and unwavering dedication to a common cause.

In 2024, a group of exceptional individuals known as the Emerging Leaders stepped forward to make a significant difference. This cohort of passionate fundraisers committed to raising $5,000 or more to support LLS in their mission. Together, their collective efforts resulted in nearly $1 million, a testament to their dedication and the power of collective action.

However, the impact of the Emerging Leaders extends far beyond the monetary contribution. They bring hope, visibility, and renewed energy to the cause. "I have directly seen the difference LLS has made in the lives of survivors and their families in their ongoing effort to eradicate blood cancer,” said Dylan Wallace, one of the Emerging Leaders. His words capture the tangible difference LLS makes in the lives of those impacted by the disease.

Light The Night is a multifaceted event. It’s a celebration of survivors, acknowledging their incredible strength and resilience in the face of adversity. It’s a show of support for those currently undergoing treatment, reminding them that they are not alone in their fight. And it’s a way to honor and remember loved ones lost to blood cancer, ensuring their memory lives on.

Everyone who participates in Light The Night carries a lantern, each color representing a different connection to the cause. White lanterns are carried by survivors, symbolizing their triumph over the disease. Red lanterns represent the supporters, friends, and family members who stand alongside them. And gold lanterns are carried by those walking in memory of someone they’ve lost, honoring their legacy and keeping their spirit alive.

The collective glow of these lanterns sends a powerful message: you are not alone. This sense of community and shared purpose is a cornerstone of the Light The Night experience, providing comfort, strength, and encouragement to all who participate.

The driving force behind LLS’s work is a deep commitment to eradicating blood cancers and supporting those affected. To date, LLS has invested over $1.8 billion in research, leading to significant breakthroughs in treatment and improving the lives of countless patients.

Beyond research, LLS provides one-on-one support for patients and their families, helping them navigate the complexities of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. They advocate for better healthcare policies, working to ensure that everyone has access to the care they need. Ultimately, LLS strives to ensure that no one facing blood cancer has to face it alone.

All of this vital work is made possible by the people who power LLS – the donors, volunteers, and dedicated individuals who believe in their mission. The Emerging Leaders embody this spirit, working full-time jobs, caring for their families, and still finding the time and energy to raise money for a cause they deeply believe in. They are everyday people doing extraordinary things.

“The Emerging Leader experience was more rewarding than I could have ever imagined,” said Jamie Smith. “It allowed me to find a purpose greater than myself by advocating for a mission that holds a special place in my heart.” Her words reflect the profound personal fulfillment that comes from contributing to something larger than oneself.

Behind every dollar raised, there is a real person and often, a personal story. Many Emerging Leaders have witnessed the devastating impact of blood cancer in their own communities, driving their commitment to finding a cure.

Consider the story of Sofia, a young girl from North Carolina. At the tender age of 3, Sofia’s energy began to fade, and she developed strange fevers. Blood tests revealed the terrifying truth: she had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Her parents, Janaye and her partner, were stunned.

Their lives were irrevocably changed in an instant. “We became cancer parents,” said Janaye. Sofia’s treatment was long and arduous. She and her parents lived under strict isolation rules for nearly a year, spending countless hours at the hospital each week. They navigated a sea of fear, anxiety, and exhaustion.

Amidst the challenges, they found strength and support from family, friends, and LLS. Attending their first Light The Night event in 2023 was a transformative experience. They were enveloped in love, community, and most importantly, hope.

“Sofia felt so loved,” Janaye said. “Everyone she knows came to support her.” Now, Sofia is nearing the end of her treatment, scheduled for late 2025. While her parents still harbor concerns about relapse, they are filled with hope, knowing they are not alone in their journey.

These are the families LLS supports, the stories that inspire the Emerging Leaders, and the reason why they dedicate their time and energy to the cause.

In their mission, this community of heroes – survivors, families, donors, and volunteers – shines through the darkness of cancer.

“When I received my blood cancer diagnosis in 2019, I had nowhere to turn,” said Dr. Nicole Albstein. “I was soon connected with LLS who gave me advice, shared resources and connected me with survivors who shared their experiences.” Her story underscores the vital role LLS plays in providing support and resources to those newly diagnosed.

Looking ahead, the Emerging Leaders are undaunted and committed to lighting the way for others, one step at a time.
