Leon Goretzka’s National Team Return: Effenberg Advocates for Bayern Munich Star

Stefan Effenberg Calls for Leon Goretzka’s Return to the German National Team

German television pundit Stefan Effenberg has expressed his support for the return of Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka to the German national team.

In his column for t-online.de, Effenberg argued that Goretzka’s recent performances for Bayern warrant his inclusion in the national team squad.

"Goretzka has fought his way into the Bayern starting lineup, and a Bayern regular should always be a candidate for the national team," Effenberg wrote. "If the DFB is serious about the principle of performance – and it has been under Nagelsmann so far – then they must consider Goretzka for the upcoming internationals at the end of March and recall him."

Goretzka had made 57 appearances for Germany, with his last coming against Austria in November 2023. However, he was not selected by then-national team manager Julian Nagelsmann for subsequent squads.

Effenberg highlighted Goretzka’s determination and resilience in the face of adversity.

"He has shown what an outstanding professional he is, he has never given up, he has never complained, but has always responded on the pitch, whether in training or in games," Effenberg said. "He has shown character. Every coach would want a player like that."

Goretzka’s resurgence at Bayern under new manager Vincent Kompany has coincided with a return to form for the 28-year-old.

After struggling to break into the starting lineup at the beginning of the season, Goretzka has become a key figure in Kompany’s midfield, impressing with his energy, passing range, and goalscoring ability.

Effenberg believes that Goretzka’s form at Bayern should be reflected in his status at international level.

"Goretzka is a player who can make a difference for the national team," Effenberg wrote. "He has the quality, the experience, and the winning mentality to be a valuable asset for Hansi Flick."

Flick, who took over as Germany manager after Nagelsmann left to join Bayern, is expected to announce his squad for the upcoming international matches against the Netherlands and Chile on March 19 and 26, respectively.

Goretzka’s inclusion in the squad would be a significant boost to Germany’s hopes of success in the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament, which they will host.

The midfielder’s versatility and ability to play in multiple positions would give Flick a valuable option in a competitive German squad.

Should Goretzka be recalled to the national team, it would mark a remarkable turnaround for a player who was once considered surplus to requirements. His return would be a testament to his unwavering determination and the belief shown in him by Kompany.
