A Time for Reflection and Renewal: Lent and the Resurgence of American Christianity

A recent survey from the Pew Research Center has offered a glimmer of hope to those concerned about the declining religious landscape in America. The data indicates that the long-term decrease in the number of Americans identifying as Christian has significantly slowed, with approximately six in ten professing belief in the divinity of Jesus Christ. As we enter the Lenten season, this apparent stabilization provides an opportunity to examine the factors contributing to this change and consider ways to further nurture the renewed interest in faith.

Lent, the period spanning from Ash Wednesday to Easter, is traditionally a time for Christians to engage in introspection, acknowledging their failings and making sacrifices through fasting and acts of charity. These practices serve as a form of atonement in anticipation of celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, this year, Lent presents an even greater opportunity – a chance to fortify and expand the reach of the Christian faith in a nation grappling with complex social and spiritual challenges.

The Pew Research Center’s findings reveal a particularly encouraging trend: the stabilization is, in part, driven by younger generations. After decades of successive generations demonstrating a diminished connection to Christian identity and church attendance, the survey suggests that those born between 2000 and 2006 are exhibiting a level of religious engagement comparable to those born in the 1990s. This marks a significant and positive shift, suggesting a potential reversal of the previous decline.

Beyond statistical data, anecdotal evidence from across the country supports this observation. Christians are reporting growth in their congregations, attributing much of this expansion to the presence and participation of young believers and young Christian families. Interestingly, many of these younger individuals are drawn to more traditional expressions of faith, such as the use of head coverings for women or attendance at Latin Mass. This suggests that the contemporary approach of some churches, perhaps exemplified by the "cool priest" stereotype, may not be the most effective way to engage younger generations.

What, then, are the underlying factors contributing to this renewed interest in Christianity? One compelling explanation is the growing visibility and public presence of American Christianity. For much of the early 21st century, Christianity, like other aspects of perceived societal dominance, was encouraged to take a back seat, allowing marginalized groups to gain prominence. However, recent years have witnessed a resurgence of Christian expression in the public sphere.

The proliferation of prayer apps, such as Hallow, and the increasing availability of Christian-themed content on various media platforms have played a role in bringing the message of Christ back into the public consciousness. Simultaneously, there are growing calls for prayer in schools and the display of the Ten Commandments in public spaces, further amplifying the presence of Christianity in American life.

Coupled with the increasing visibility of Christianity, younger generations may also be seeking deeper meaning and purpose in their lives, finding the offerings of social media and artificial intelligence to be ultimately unsatisfying. The pervasive use of technology has been linked to increased feelings of isolation, depression, and reduced social interaction among young Americans. Church, with its emphasis on community, connection, and spiritual growth, provides a potential antidote to these challenges. In essence, fostering community and battling loneliness is a core function of many religious organizations.

Furthermore, the prevailing "woke" ideology, with its emphasis on identity politics and a perceived hierarchy of oppression, may be driving some young people to seek an alternative. For those who embrace Christianity, their primary identity is rooted in their faith and their relationship with Jesus Christ, transcending the limitations and divisions of identity markers.

As Saint Paul wrote in his letter to the Philippians, "Let your moderation be known unto all men, the Lord is at Hand." This seemingly paradoxical statement calls for a balanced approach to faith, one that avoids ostentation while still actively sharing the Good News. Christians are encouraged to spread their faith through simple acts, such as inviting a friend to church, wearing a cross, or offering a prayer before a meal in a public setting.

America has a rich history of religious revivals, and while it may be premature to declare that we are currently experiencing one, the conditions are certainly present for a potential resurgence. The opportunity for Christians during this Lenten season, and moving forward, lies in articulating the fundamental connection between American values, rooted in Western traditions, and Christian principles. Indeed, historically, the Western world was often referred to as "Christendom" to emphasize the pervasiveness of Christian influence.

Lent provides a unique opportunity to engage in self-reflection, not with a sense of self-pity, but with a renewed commitment to living a life dedicated to serving God and others.

The stabilization of Christianity in America is a positive first step, but further growth is essential to restoring the sense of trust and unity that has been eroded in recent years.

Therefore, let us embrace this Lenten season with prayer, seeking forgiveness for our shortcomings and striving to deepen our faith, with the hope that Easter morning will bring a renewed sense of purpose and spiritual awakening.
