Lakers’ Physical Exam of Mark Williams Draws Scrutiny and Accusations

Fallout from Rescinded Trade Continues

The aftermath of the rescinded trade between the Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets involving center Mark Williams reached a new chapter on Thursday, as Williams’ agent formally accused the Lakers of mishandling the physical examination that ultimately derailed the deal.

Allegations of Improper Medical Evaluation

"The overwhelming sentiment, after conferring with multiple, nationally recognized doctors, is that the Los Angeles Lakers should not have failed Mark Williams on his physical," declared Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management in a statement released by ESPN’s Shams Charania. "Mark was ready and able to play for them and should have been given that opportunity."

Williams’ Defense and Hornets’ Exploration

Williams’ defense comes amidst the Hornets’ 100-97 victory over the Lakers on Wednesday night, in which Williams showcased his skills with 10 points and 9 rebounds in 29 minutes. It was his first game back in Charlotte since the trade fell through following the NBA trade deadline last week.

The Hornets, according to ESPN, are also exploring options to challenge the Lakers’ medical evaluation. However, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stated during the All-Star break that no appeal had been filed at that juncture.

NBA Reviewing Physical Standards

Silver acknowledged that the circumstances surrounding this particular trade could prompt the NBA to reassess its standards for the physical examination requirements necessary to complete a trade.

Trade Breakdown and Williams’ Performance

The initially reported trade on Feb. 6 would have sent Williams to the Lakers in exchange for rookie Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2031 first-round pick, and a 2030 first-round pick swap.

Despite playing in just 85 games over his first three NBA seasons, Williams is experiencing a career resurgence this year. The former Duke product and No. 15 overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft is averaging nearly a double-double with career bests in points, assists, and blocks.

Williams’ Reaction and Speculation

Williams expressed surprise at the trade reversal and questioned whether his failed physical was the sole reason for its demise. He speculated that buyer’s remorse on the part of the Lakers might have played a role.

"I didn’t think there was any world I could fail my physical," Williams told reporters. "Every time I’ve been out, it’s been documented, so I don’t know for them, if it was what they gave up or what went into that reasoning, but I don’t think it was solely because of my physical."

Trade Details and Williams’ Career

Hornets get:

  • Dalton Knecht
  • Cam Reddish
  • 2031 first-round pick
  • 2030 first-round pick swap

Despite missing significant time due to injuries in the past, Williams is showcasing his potential this season. He has played in 24 of Charlotte’s 53 games this year and is averaging career highs in various statistical categories.

Ongoing Controversy and Potential League Action

The controversy surrounding the physical examination and the rescinded trade remains unresolved. The Hornets’ potential challenge and the NBA’s review of its physical examination standards could have significant implications for future transactions.
