The problem isn’t merely the volume of submissions, which has become so overwhelming that Sanborn has instituted a $50 fee to sift through the deluge of theories. It’s the character of these submissions. Unlike the dedicated cryptanalysts who have painstakingly poured over K4 for years, analyzing patterns, testing theories, and collaborating with others, the chatbot-assisted solvers approach the puzzle with a breezy confidence born of algorithmic certainty.
"The character of the emails is different," Sanborn explained to Wired. "The people that did their code crack with AI are totally convinced that they cracked Kryptos during breakfast. So they all are very convinced that by the time they reach me, they’ve cracked it."
The audacity is striking, even comical. Sanborn has shared some of the more egregious examples of AI-fueled hubris, showcasing the submitters’ unwavering belief in their chatbot’s infallibility. One message, from someone identifying as a veteran, declared, "Cracked it in days with Grok 3." Another boasted, "What took 35 years and even the NSA with all their resources could not do I was able to do in only 3 hours before I even had my morning coffee." And yet another proclaimed, with characteristic bombast, "History’s rewritten…no errors 100% cracked."
These pronouncements, dripping with smugness, reflect a growing trend in the age of readily available AI. It’s a phenomenon familiar to anyone who spends time online: the individual who parrots chatbot outputs as if they represent profound insights, the commenter who dismissively suggests, "Just Grok it," the sharer of ChatGPT screenshots presented as irrefutable evidence.
The underlying question is: where does this surge of self-satisfaction originate? Even if a chatbot were to successfully crack K4 (which, according to Sanborn, they haven’t even come close to doing), what is it about outsourcing the intellectual heavy lifting to a machine that engenders such a sense of accomplishment?
