Challenges and Opportunities for SMEs in Saxony and Thuringia: Embracing Artificial Intelligence

Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the German states of Saxony and Thuringia are still in the early stages of adopting artificial intelligence (AI), according to an expert. "Companies are actively exploring AI, but concrete implementation projects are generally still in their infancy," said Sebastian Gerth from the AI Hub Saxony-Thuringia. The business sector is currently in an orientation phase regarding AI.

One reason for this is the small-scale company structure in the two states. "There are few companies here that can simply hire one or two AI experts," Gerth explained. However, the larger the company, the easier it is to implement projects. Often, there are also individual employees who have an interest in the topic.

The biggest obstacle, however, is the current economic situation. For many companies, it is currently difficult to estimate when an investment in AI will pay off. "But economically, we are not in a situation where companies can simply experiment," Gerth said. However, there are subsidies from public funds and content support within the framework of the AI Hub.

In fact, AI can be used in some areas to cushion the impact of the upcoming wave of retirements. "AI can be used to capture the knowledge of people who have been working at a machine for 30 or 40 years," Gerth said.

For instance, an experienced employee can tell whether all the settings on a machine are correct. If they are not, the employee can hear it and adjust the production parameters accordingly. An AI can now learn to optimize the settings of the machine independently if the problem occurs again.

However, there is also skepticism among employees. "We were able to show in a study that production workers in particular fear that AI will significantly determine their own work or even take away their jobs," Gerth said. "But we are still a long way from AI that can replace people. When we use AI today, it is only in a small sub-area."

It is more about supporting employees with AI. It is important that people perceive AI as a helper and not as a competitor. This is where management is called upon to communicate the topic correctly.

The AI Hub Saxony-Thuringia is an association of the Mittelstand-Digital Centers Ilmenau and Chemnitz. The project, funded by federal funds, is a contact point for companies that want to learn more about AI or start their own initial projects. For example, a series of online events for small and medium-sized enterprises will start in March.

To address the challenges and embrace the opportunities of AI adoption, SMEs in Saxony and Thuringia can consider the following strategies:

  • Overcoming structural barriers: Collaborate with research institutions, industry associations, and larger companies to gain access to expertise and resources.
  • Investing in education and training: Upskill the workforce in AI fundamentals, data analysis, and software development to create a pool of qualified professionals within the organization.
  • Overcoming financial constraints: Explore government grants, subsidies, and tax incentives to support AI implementation projects.
  • Managing AI-related concerns: Engage in open and transparent communication with employees to address fears and build trust in the benefits of AI. Emphasize the role of AI as a tool for enhancing productivity and empowering human workers.
  • Starting small and scaling up: Begin with pilot projects in specific areas where AI can provide clear value. Gradually expand AI applications as experience and understanding grow.

Beyond the general challenges and opportunities, there are specific ways in which AI can benefit SMEs in the manufacturing and industrial sectors, which are prominent in Saxony and Thuringia. These include:

  • Predictive maintenance: AI algorithms can analyze sensor data from machines to predict potential failures, enabling companies to schedule maintenance proactively and minimize downtime.
  • Quality control: AI-powered image recognition systems can inspect products for defects with greater accuracy and consistency than human inspectors, improving product quality and reducing waste.
