Kelly Loeffler Advances in Senate Confirmation for SBA Leadership
Procedural Vote Clears Path for Final Confirmation
Former Senator Kelly Loeffler, nominated by President Donald Trump to lead the Small Business Administration (SBA), passed a key procedural vote in the Senate on Thursday, February 11, 2021. This move sets the stage for her final confirmation vote, which will determine whether she assumes the role of SBA Administrator.
The Cloture Vote
The Senate voted 51-43 to invoke cloture on Loeffler’s nomination, ending the debate on her qualifications and advancing her to the confirmation stage. The cloture vote effectively limits further debate on the nomination, allowing the Senate to move towards a final vote.
Loeffler’s Qualifications
Loeffler, a Georgia Republican, left behind a successful career in the private sector to join the Senate. She served a brief term from January 2020 to January 2021, having been appointed to replace former Senator Johnny Isakson. During her time in the Senate, Loeffler gained recognition as a vocal supporter of President Trump’s "America First" agenda.
Commitment to Donating Federal Salary
Loeffler has pledged to continue the practice of donating her federal salary to charities and non-profits across the country if she is confirmed as SBA Administrator. She has previously donated her annual Senate salary to organizations such as food banks, faith groups, and those focused on abortion opposition, foster care, healthcare, agriculture, education, law enforcement, and disaster relief.
Business Experience
Prior to her Senate career, Loeffler worked at several top financial firms, including Intercontinental Exchange (ICE). Her husband, Jeffrey Sprecher, is the current chairman of the New York Stock Exchange. Loeffler also owned a minority stake in the WNBA Atlanta Dream.
Confirmation Hearing Controversy
Loeffler faced criticism during her confirmation hearing from Senator Edward Markey (D-Mass) over the Trump administration’s announcement that it would freeze federal funds and grants. Markey called for a halt to Loeffler’s confirmation consideration until the situation was resolved.
Support from Republicans
Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), the committee’s chairwoman, praised Loeffler’s qualifications and described her as the "perfect person for the job." Ernst highlighted Loeffler’s business experience and her understanding of the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in dealing with government bureaucracy.
Final Confirmation Vote Pending
With the procedural vote clearing the way, Loeffler’s nomination will now proceed to a final confirmation vote in the Senate. The timing of this vote has not yet been announced, but it is expected to occur in the coming days or weeks.
