Los Angeles Lakers Coach JJ Redick’s Scathing Critique of the NBA All-Star Game

"I Didn’t Watch Any of That S—"

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has stirred up controversy with his blunt assessment of the 2023 NBA All-Star festivities. When asked by reporters about his thoughts on the showcase event, Redick held no punches back.

"I didn’t watch any of that s—," Redick said.

Declining Interest in the All-Star Game

Redick’s scathing criticism echoes a growing sentiment among basketball enthusiasts and pundits alike. The NBA All-Star Game has faced criticism over the years for its perceived lack of competitive intensity, as players prioritize avoiding injuries over showcasing their full potential.

The result has been a game marked by wide-open dunks, soft defense, and an abundance of three-pointers. The absence of LeBron James, who sat out this year’s game with an ankle injury, may have further contributed to the lack of excitement for Redick.

NHL’s Successful All-Star Experiment

In contrast to the NBA, the NHL has experimented with a different approach to its All-Star festivities. The 2023 NHL All-Star Game featured the 4 Nations Face-Off, a tournament-style event that pitted the United States, Canada, Finland, and Sweden against each other.

The change has been met with widespread praise from fans and critics alike, providing a more competitive and engaging spectacle. However, some NBA players, including reigning MVP Nikola Jokić, believe that the All-Star Game should not be tampered with.

"I don’t know. I think it’s not a question for me. … I think it’s always going to be like this, so we should accept it," Jokić said.

Redick’s Personal Reasons for Absence

Redick’s absence from the All-Star festivities was not solely due to his disdain for the event. He also had personal matters to attend to, having lost his home to the wildfires in Los Angeles County.

"My goal for [the] All-Star break is that I finalize my insurance claims and that I find an apartment to live in," Redick said. "That’s what I’m hoping for and to get out [of] the hotel. That’ll be nice."

Lakers’ Season Resumes

The Lakers will resume their season on Wednesday night against the Charlotte Hornets, sitting fifth in the Western Conference with a 32-20 record. Redick will be tasked with devising a plan to contain Luka Dončić, the superstar acquired by the Dallas Mavericks in a blockbuster trade before the All-Star break.

Redick’s comments have sparked a debate about the future of the NBA All-Star Game. Whether the league will respond to these criticisms and implement changes remains to be seen.
