FC Augsburg Extends Jeffrey Gouweleeuw’s Contract to 2026: A Decade of Dedication

Augsburg, Germany – FC Augsburg has announced the extension of defender Jeffrey Gouweleeuw’s contract for an additional season, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2026. The 33-year-old Dutch captain is now set to enter his tenth season with the Bundesliga club.

Gouweleeuw joined Augsburg from AZ Alkmaar in January 2016 and has since made 260 competitive appearances for the club. His performances this season have triggered an optional contract extension, as confirmed by the club ahead of their away match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday.

"I’ve always emphasized how comfortable I feel in Augsburg with my family," said Gouweleeuw. "Therefore, I’m delighted to be able to wear the FCA jersey beyond this season and start my tenth season in Augsburg."

"It’s not often these days that a player stays with a club for so long without interruption. It’s something special for me, and it makes me very proud."

Gouweleeuw’s extended stay at Augsburg was not initially certain. Former Sporting Director Stefan Reuter had expressed his desire to not extend the defender’s contract, which was set to expire in 2024, as part of a plan to reshape the team’s structure and hierarchy.

However, Gouweleeuw has proven his worth to Augsburg this season.

"He’s had an outstanding season for me so far and has demonstrated his leadership on the pitch," said manager Jess Thorup about the resolute defender, who has played a significant role in Augsburg’s six-match unbeaten run.

"Jeff has been a constant in our team this season and leads by example as captain," added Sporting Director Marinko Jurendic. "With his attitude and performances over the past years, he has become a deserving player for FCA."

Gouweleeuw’s contract extension is a testament to his dedication to Augsburg and his value to the team. He has been a cornerstone of the club’s defense and a respected leader in the dressing room.

The Dutchman’s experience and composure will be crucial as Augsburg looks to continue its impressive run of form and secure a comfortable position in the Bundesliga table.
