Corruption Probe Targets Huntington Park Officials Over $14 Million Aquatic Center Project

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman has launched a major corruption investigation into the alleged misuse of $14 million in public funds allocated for the construction of an aquatic center in Huntington Park, California. The probe, dubbed "Operation Dirty Pond," has led to raids on the city hall building, the mayor’s residence, and the homes of current and former city council members.

The Huntington Park Regional Aquatic Center, once touted as a critical addition to the city on its official website, was envisioned as a two-story complex featuring an Olympic-size pool, gymnasium, football field, conference rooms, and other amenities. However, despite the significant investment of public funds, residents have yet to see any tangible results.

"This is a project that has yielded nothing for the residents," stated Vice Mayor Arturo Flores in an interview with FOX 11 Los Angeles. "It’s my understanding that there’s an estimated $14 million, give or take, that has been expended by the city, and that from those funds, the residents of the city have only received an empty lot with dead grass and nothing to show for those millions of dollars."

The District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the investigation has been underway since November 2022, focusing on the potential misuse of funds intended for the aquatic center’s construction. The raids conducted on Wednesday resulted in the seizure of numerous items, including public records, financial documents, and electronic devices, which are now being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

District Attorney Hochman emphasized his commitment to upholding the integrity of public officials and ensuring transparency in the use of public funds. "My office is committed to ensuring that public officials uphold the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and transparency," Hochman stated. "When concerns arise about the use of public funds or the actions of those in office, it is our duty to investigate thoroughly and protect the public’s trust."

The District Attorney also commended the prosecutors and investigators involved in the case for their dedication and diligence. "I want to commend our dedicated prosecutors and investigators for their diligent work on this complex case," Hochman added. "Their unwavering commitment to justice ensures that no one – regardless of their position or title – is above the law."

The investigation has drawn attention to past concerns raised by former Huntington Park city council member Linda Caraballo, who claims to have alerted the District Attorney’s Office to alleged corruption within the city government years ago. Caraballo reportedly sent a 282-page dossier outlining her concerns.

"Big time city officials from the city manager all the way down to the shot caller should be prepared," Caraballo told FOX 11. "Heads are going to roll and a lot of people are going to be really put into some serious problems. They all should find lawyers right away."

Another former Huntington Park council member, Valentin Amezquita, believes that the aquatic center project may not be an isolated incident and has called for a comprehensive forensic audit of the city’s current and past contracts. "This is just the tip of the iceberg," Amezquita told FOX 11. "There’s many, many more."

The investigation into the Huntington Park Regional Aquatic Center project has cast a shadow over the city government and raised serious questions about the management of public funds. The residents of Huntington Park are demanding answers and accountability from their elected officials. The outcome of "Operation Dirty Pond" could have far-reaching consequences for the city’s leadership and its future. The case is ongoing, and further developments are expected as the investigation progresses. The District Attorney’s Office has vowed to pursue all available avenues to uncover the truth and ensure that justice is served. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in government, and the need for vigilance in safeguarding public funds. The residents of Huntington Park, and the wider public, will be watching closely as this investigation unfolds. The spotlight is now firmly on Huntington Park, as authorities seek to unravel the alleged web of corruption and determine who is responsible for the apparent misuse of millions of dollars intended to benefit the community. The investigation promises to be a complex and potentially lengthy process, but the District Attorney’s Office has made it clear that it is committed to pursuing the truth, no matter where it leads. The people of Huntington Park deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent, and they deserve to have confidence in the integrity of their elected officials. This investigation is a crucial step towards restoring that trust and ensuring that such alleged abuses of power do not go unpunished.
