HSV Striker Glatzel Eyes Return from Injury, Aims for March Comeback

Hamburg’s Robert Glatzel on Course for February Return

Hamburger SV striker Robert Glatzel is making positive progress in his recovery from a serious hip injury, according to head coach Merlin Polzin.

"We are very optimistic that we will be able to see and utilize him in numerous games this season," Polzin said ahead of Hamburg’s match against Jahn Regensburg on Sunday.

Glatzel himself has set an approximate timeline for his return, aiming to join team training in February and make his first appearance of the campaign in March.

"The plan is still to start team training in February and play again in March," Glatzel said in an interview with the club. "Ultimately, I just want to be fit on the pitch again, and whether that’s a week earlier or later isn’t crucial."

Polzin believes Glatzel, who underwent surgery in October, is on track to resume his prolific goalscoring form for HSV. The 31-year-old has been working closely with the club’s medical department and is gradually increasing his workload.

"The next step will be to increase the intensity of his training sessions, so that he can be partially integrated into the team," Polzin explained.

However, the coach emphasized the need for caution to prevent any setbacks. "That’s why it will still take some time before he’s back training fully with the team, but he’s definitely on schedule."

In Glatzel’s absence, Davie Selke has stepped up to lead the line for Hamburg. The 30-year-old has impressed in recent weeks, scoring a brace in last weekend’s 2-1 win over Münster. With 13 goals, Selke is currently Hamburg’s top scorer in the second division.

Glatzel’s Injury History and Significance to Hamburg

Glatzel has been a key figure for HSV since joining the club in 2018. The German striker has scored 44 goals in 83 appearances for the Red Shorts and has been instrumental in their push for promotion back to the Bundesliga.

However, Glatzel’s career has been plagued by injuries. He missed a significant portion of the 2019/20 season with an ankle problem and has had recurring issues with his hip.

The severity of his latest injury raised concerns that he may not be able to continue playing at the same level. However, Glatzel’s determination and the support of HSV’s medical staff have given him hope of making a full recovery.

His return will be a major boost for Hamburg, who are currently third in the second division standings. Glatzel’s goalscoring prowess and experience would be invaluable in their bid to secure automatic promotion to the Bundesliga.

Selke’s Rise as Glatzel’s Replacement

Davie Selke has seized the opportunity to shine in Glatzel’s absence. The former Werder Bremen striker has scored five goals in his last four appearances for HSV, including a brace against Münster.

Selke has shown his versatility by scoring different types of goals, including headers, penalties, and opportunistic finishes. His goalscoring form has coincided with an upturn in Hamburg’s results, with the team winning four of their last five matches.

Polzin has praised Selke for his work ethic and professionalism. "He’s a guy who always gives everything he has," Polzin said. "He’s a very important player for us, and we’re very happy to have him."

Conclusion

Robert Glatzel is closing in on a return to action for Hamburg, providing a major boost to their promotion hopes. Davie Selke has performed admirably in Glatzel’s absence, but the club will be eager to welcome back their talismanic striker. With Glatzel and Selke leading the line, HSV will be confident of mounting a serious challenge for promotion back to the Bundesliga.
