How the Outrageous Hamburg AfD Party Aggravates and Misleads

Navigating the Labyrinth of Political Promises: A Journey through the Hamburg AfD’s Electoral Manifesto

In the realm of Hamburg politics, there is a peculiar entity known as the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland), a party that exhibits a perplexing duality. On one hand, the AfD professes to be offended when treated as an outsider, yet on the other hand, they bristle at the notion of being accorded the same treatment as other parties. Recently, the AfD dismissed several of our innocuous inquiries about their party as biased, opting to withhold clear answers.

This evasive behavior stands in stark contrast to the party’s usual penchant for verbal vitriol, hurled indiscriminately at political opponents and asylum seekers alike. The AfD’s conduct evokes memories of a boisterous schoolyard bully who delights in tormenting the parallel class, but promptly bursts into tears when the tables are turned. One can only speculate that the party’s demeanor mirrors that of a boxer, capable of delivering brutal blows but possessing a feeble tolerance for receiving them.

With this enigmatic nature in mind, let us delve into the AfD’s proposed alternatives for Hamburg. As expected, their immigration policy veers towards the extreme. The party extols the virtues of Denmark’s approach, which it claims involves the centralized accommodation of asylum seekers. Specifically, the AfD points to the island of Lindholm, where Denmark houses illegal migrants. Citing this model, the AfD advocates for the establishment of a similar facility on Hamburg’s very own Neuwerk island.

However, a thorough investigation reveals that the AfD’s claims are largely unfounded. Seven years ago, the government of Denmark did indeed consider plans to relocate convicted asylum seekers to Lindholm. However, these plans were abandoned in 2019 when the Social Democrats took power. This information was gleaned from Danish media sources and corroborated by Troels Heeger, a journalist for the esteemed Berlingske newspaper. "It never happened," Heeger confirmed.

Undeterred by the facts, the AfD persists in its proposal to establish a facility on Neuwerk, which, it should be noted, is indeed an island belonging to Hamburg. Upon further inquiry, the AfD initially provided a cordial response, acknowledging that the construction of a facility on Neuwerk had been removed from the party’s agenda at the behest of an unnamed "elderly lady" within their ranks. However, despite this admission, the proposal inexplicably reappeared in the final version of the manifesto. The party has since indicated that it will explore the possibility of amending the passage prior to the election.

While you’re at it, dear AfD, might we suggest addressing another glaring error? In your manifesto, you refer to the adjacent St. Nikolai memorial with a "c" instead of a "k."

To our esteemed readers, we bid you a restful weekend and eagerly anticipate our next encounter.

Yours sincerely, Christoph Heinemann

Hamburg Crime Statistics: Mixed Signals

Hamburg’s newly released crime statistics present a mixed picture. While the overall number of offenses decreased by 4 percent, the city witnessed an alarming surge in violent crime. The total number of reported crimes dropped to 224,913, 9,328 fewer than the previous year. However, the clearance rate declined slightly to 47.9 percent (down from 48.2 percent).

The positive trend can be partly attributed to the legalization of cannabis, which resulted in a significant decline in drug-related offenses. According to Senator Andy Grote (SPD), new security measures implemented at locations such as the central train station, coupled with increased police presence, have also contributed to the overall reduction in crime.

Notably, the number of life-threatening offenses, including murder and manslaughter, plummeted by almost 46 percent, with only 40 cases recorded in 2024. Conversely, overall violent crime, encompassing bodily harm and other offenses, rose by 7.2 percent. The police registered 8,998 violent crimes, 77 percent of which occurred in the districts of St. Pauli and St. Georg. The frequency of knife-related offenses remained relatively stable, with 1,266 incidents recorded in 2024. Firearms were used in 117 violent crimes, involving 53 shootings and 64 threats.

Sexual offenses also experienced an increase, with 3,259 cases reported, representing a 3.1 percent rise compared to the previous year. Exhibitionism, sexual harassment, and the distribution of child pornography accounted for a significant portion of these offenses. Rape cases climbed by 8.8 percent or 23 incidents, reaching a total of 285. It is worth noting that nearly half of the reported rapes occurred in 2023 or earlier.

It should be emphasized that the crime statistics only include offenses where the investigations were completed within the given year, which limits the comprehensiveness of the data. The Federal Association of German Criminal Investigation Officers (BDK) has criticized Hamburg for underreporting specific crimes, particularly those involving firearms. A recent investigation into this issue can be found here.
