Neele Fokken Joins the Ranks of Hamburg’s Michel Tower Keepers
For the first time in its over 300-year-old history, the Hamburger Michel has appointed a female tower keeper: Neele Fokken (27). Fokken will share the role with long-time tower keeper Josef Thöne (65), as announced by the Hamburg Hauptkirche St. Michaelis.
A Versatile Background
Fokken, a 27-year-old accomplished musician and educator, has a diverse educational background that includes studies in trumpet, cultural management, and elementary school education. She is currently a trumpet and music teacher at a Hamburg elementary school.
Expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to carry on this long-standing tradition, Fokken said, "The enduring nature of this cultural heritage deeply impresses me. It always brings me joy to play the chorale from the tower."
A Protestant Tradition with a Rich History
The tradition of playing chorales from the tower dates back to the Protestant Reformation. At the Michel, this practice has been in place for over 300 years. Every morning at 10 am and every evening at 9 pm, the tower keeper ascends to the "Türmerboden," a platform located 100 meters above ground, to play a chorale in all four cardinal directions. This ritual is performed in honor of God and to bring joy to the people below.
Historically, the tower chorales also served as a form of timekeeping and an invitation to pause and reflect amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. The tower keeper selects the chorales to be played based on the liturgical calendar. On special occasions, the hymn "Lobe den Herren" ("Praise the Lord") is played.
A Cultural Legacy Preserved
Fokken’s appointment as a tower keeper is a testament to the church’s commitment to preserving and sharing its cultural heritage. The chorale-playing tradition at the Hamburger Michel has become an iconic part of the city’s identity, and Fokken is eager to continue this legacy.
"I am proud to be part of this tradition and to contribute to the vibrant cultural landscape of Hamburg," said Fokken.
A Shared Responsibility
Fokken will share the tower keeper duties with Josef Thöne, who has been a faithful servant of the Michel for many years. Thöne, who is retiring soon, is confident that Fokken will fulfill her role with the same dedication and passion that he has brought to the position.
"I have every confidence in Neele Fokken," said Thöne. "She is a talented musician and a compassionate individual who will honor the tradition of the Michel tower keepers."
A Symbol of Hope and Renewal
The appointment of Neele Fokken as the Michel’s first female tower keeper is a symbolic moment for both the church and the city of Hamburg. It represents the ongoing evolution of traditions and the embrace of diversity and inclusivity.
Fokken’s presence on the tower will serve as an inspiration to others, demonstrating that women can and should play a meaningful role in all aspects of society. It is a sign of hope and renewal for the Michel and for Hamburg as a whole.
