HillmanTok University: Bridging the Gap for Black Education
Introduction
At a time when diversity and inclusion initiatives face unprecedented challenges, a virtual college has emerged to champion the unique educational needs of the Black community. HillmanTok University, launched on TikTok in late January, offers a transformative experience inspired by historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
Virtual HBCU Experience
HillmanTok University was founded by Cierra Hinton, a former elementary school teacher, as a response to the Trump administration’s attacks on federal diversity initiatives. The college’s mission is to provide an online platform where Black learners and educators can connect, access quality education, and foster a sense of community.
The college boasts a rapidly expanding enrollment of over 11,000 students, who have access to almost 400 free courses streamed across multiple online platforms. The courses cover a wide range of subjects, from traditional academic disciplines like psychology and Spanish to more unique offerings like "We Got Food at Home," a culinary course.
Empowering Black Educators and Learners
Hinton emphasizes that HillmanTok University is a virtual Black college taught by real college professors. The model empowers Black educators to share their knowledge and passion for teaching with a diverse audience.
"There are people who are thirsty for education and knowledge, and there are people who are very desiring to give it," says Hinton. "Everyone is in a place of trying to focus on what we can control instead of what we cant."
Combating Educational Rollbacks and Political Climate
In the wake of rollbacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, HillmanTok University provides a much-needed sanctuary for Black learners and educators. The virtual platform allows them to connect and engage in learning without facing the systemic barriers that often hinder their access to quality education.
"The online model of a university is bringing joy and community to Black learners and teachers during the rollbacks on DEI and the current political climate," says Hinton.
Cultural Significance and Inspiration
The name HillmanTok University pays homage to the fictional setting of "A Different World," a groundbreaking sitcom that aired from 1987 to 1993. The show was set at a fictional HBCU called Hillman College and celebrated Black culture and education.
"There are some people that don’t even realize that Hillman is a reference to one of the biggest groundbreaking shows in Black sitcoms," says Hinton. "Some people don’t even realize that Black sitcoms were a big thing in all of TV history. We’re restoring culture."
Embracing Black History Month
During Black History Month, HillmanTok University places even greater emphasis on spreading the message of joy and culture.
"It’s about community appreciation, community uplifting, and community connection," says Leah Moffit, a team member at HillmanTok University.
