High Fine Dust Levels Persist in Northern Germany: Causes and Health Impacts

Persistent Fine Dust Pollution in Northern Germany

Fine dust pollution continues to persist in the Northern German state of Niedersachsen, following poor air quality levels recorded in many parts of the country on Wednesday. According to the German Environment Agency (UBA), elevated fine dust concentrations are now primarily confined to the northern half of Germany.

The UBA’s map released on Thursday morning reveals that the situation in Niedersachsen is particularly concerning, with several areas exceeding permissible fine dust limits. The northeastern region of Germany is even more severely affected, with numerous locations experiencing significant exceedances.

Fine dust particles, if inhaled through the nose and mouth, can penetrate deep into the lungs, potentially reaching and damaging the alveoli (air sacs) and bloodstream.

The affected regions include all eastern German states, northern North Rhine-Westphalia, northern Hesse, and parts of Schleswig-Holstein. Jacqueline Kern, a meteorologist at the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach, attributes the geographic divide in fine dust levels primarily to prevailing weather patterns.

"There is currently more rainfall in the southern regions," explains Kern. "Rain helps to bind and wash away pollutants, which is why fine dust concentrations are lower there." Additionally, Germany is experiencing low wind speeds, resulting in limited air exchange.

Kern anticipates that the elevated air pollution levels will persist into the weekend. "I expect the air quality to remain poor," she says. High-pressure conditions are expected to prevail over Germany, forcing air from above downward, further hindering air exchange.

However, there is a silver lining, according to the meteorologist. Air from the north, originating from the North Sea and Baltic Sea, will begin to flow into Germany over the weekend. This cleaner air is expected to provide some relief from the heavily polluted air that has been arriving from Eastern Europe.

Individuals with compromised health, such as those suffering from asthma, allergies, or acute respiratory ailments, are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activities when air quality is poor.

Fine dust pollution primarily stems from road traffic, power plants, district heating systems, household stoves and heating units, as well as industrial and agricultural activities. During winter months, fine dust emissions are exacerbated by increased wood burning in fireplaces and higher vehicle emissions.
