Particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations are particularly concerning, with 19 measurement stations reporting levels exceeding the limit of 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air. These tiny particles can penetrate the lungs and even reach the bloodstream, potentially causing significant health problems.

Health Implications

The UBA’s specialist for air quality assessment, Ute Dauert, emphasizes the importance of avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during periods of poor air quality. Instead, engaging in leisurely walks is recommended to minimize air pollution exposure.

Sources of Feinstaub
According to the UBA, the primary sources of particulate matter include road traffic, power plants, residential heating systems, and industrial and agricultural activities. Feinstaub emissions tend to be higher during winter months due to increased wood burning for heating and elevated traffic emissions.

Environmental Impact
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) highlights the urgent need for a coal phase-out in light of the severe Feinstaub pollution. Climate expert Sebastian Breer stresses that the health risks posed by air pollution are a direct consequence of Germany and Europe’s continued reliance on fossil fuels. He laments the lack of attention paid to climate protection and environmental conservation in the ongoing federal election campaign. The WWF advocates for comprehensive reforms in the energy, heating, and transportation sectors.

Deadly Consequences
The Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) cites data from the European Environment Agency (EEA), which estimates that tens of thousands of deaths in Germany can be attributed to the health effects of high Feinstaub levels.

Meteorological Factors
Meteorological conditions have also contributed to the current air pollution situation. Marcel Schmid of the German Weather Service (DWD) explains that persistent high-pressure systems and weak atmospheric exchange have allowed pollutants to accumulate. Certain areas have also experienced temperature inversions, where a layer of warm air traps cooler air below it, exacerbating the problem.

Schmid anticipates an improvement in air quality in the near future as a low-pressure system approaches from the west. This will bring precipitation and help disperse the accumulated air pollution.
