Hamburg’s Winternotprogramm: Diakonie Demands All-Day Shelter for Homeless Amidst Cold Snap

Hamburg’s Diakonie Calls for Expanded Hours of Winter Shelter Amidst Frigid Temperatures

As freezing temperatures grip Hamburg, the city’s Diakonie organization has issued an urgent plea for the round-the-clock operation of winter shelters. The sub-zero nighttime conditions pose a grave risk to the homeless population, who face chronic health issues and struggle to survive on the streets.

"A simple viral infection can have deadly consequences for those living on the streets," warns the Diakonie. Statistics reveal that a majority of homeless deaths in the previous year were caused by complications from treatable illnesses.

Midnight Bus: A Lifeline on Chilly Nights

For those enduring the frigid nights on Hamburg’s streets, the Diakonie’s Midnight Bus provides a lifeline. Every night, volunteers distribute hot beverages, baked goods, warm blankets, sleeping bags, clothing, and a touch of compassion. They also offer guidance to assistance services and sleeping accommodations within the winter shelter program.

Expanded Shelter Hours: A Critical Need

The existing overnight shelters operate from 5:00 PM to 9:30 AM daily, offering beds, meals, and essential hygiene facilities. However, the Diakonie emphasizes the urgent need for 24-hour shelter access.

"The overnight hours are when temperatures plunge and the risk to homeless individuals is at its peak," explains the organization. "Extending the shelter hours would provide them with a safe haven during these critical periods."

Comprehensive Services for the Homeless

In addition to shelter, the Diakonie’s winter shelter program offers a range of support services. Homeless individuals receive counseling, health screenings, and assistance in accessing rehabilitation programs and permanent housing.

Dire Consequences of Neglect

The Diakonie’s appeal highlights the alarming consequences of neglecting the needs of the homeless population.

"Last year, six homeless people in Hamburg died of cold-related illnesses," says the organization. "These deaths are preventable tragedies that underscore the importance of providing adequate shelter and support."

Call to Action

The Diakonie urges the city of Hamburg and the federal government to take immediate action to address the urgent needs of the homeless during this winter season.

"We implore authorities to heed our call and provide the necessary resources to expand winter shelter hours and ensure that every homeless person has a safe and warm place to spend the night," concludes the organization.
