Hamburg’s Pharmacy Sector Faces Challenges: SPD and Greens Seek Financial Aid

Introduction

The Hamburg Parliament’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Green Party have joined forces to address the dwindling number of pharmacies in the city, advocating for increased financial support to ensure their survival. This move comes amid concerns over the potential loss of valuable healthcare services and trusted sources of community support.

Declining Pharmacy Numbers

According to data from the German Federal Union of Pharmacists’ Associations, Hamburg has witnessed a significant decline in the number of pharmacies in recent years. In 2014, the city boasted 423 pharmacies, but that number has dropped by 12.8% to 369 in 2023. This places Hamburg below the national average of 20.8 pharmacies per 100,000 inhabitants, with only 19.8 pharmacies available for the same population size.

Reasons for Decline

The SPD and Green Party cite rising operating costs and economic pressures as major factors contributing to the decline in pharmacies. The increased expenses have made it difficult for many to remain financially viable. Additionally, the high cost of certain medications has put a strain on pharmacies, leading to concerns over their ability to provide these essential services.

Call for Financial Support

To address these challenges, the SPD and Green Party have submitted a proposal to the Hamburg Parliament, calling for increased financial assistance for pharmacies. They propose that the Senate advocate at the federal level for higher reimbursement rates, arguing that this would help ensure the survival of these vital healthcare providers.

Furthermore, the proposal suggests exploring the possibility of shifting the liability risk in cases of manufacturer insolvency to health insurance companies. This would reduce the financial burden on pharmacies and allow them to focus on providing crucial services to the community.

Previous Efforts

The concerns raised by the SPD and Green Party are not new. In June 2022, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) introduced a similar proposal, advocating for higher reimbursement rates and supporting neighborhood pharmacies. However, that proposal was referred to the Committee on Consumer Protection for further consideration.

Importance of Pharmacies

Pharmacies play a pivotal role in healthcare by providing essential medications, offering professional advice, and serving as a source of support for patients. Their presence in communities is crucial for ensuring access to vital healthcare services, particularly for those with chronic conditions or limited mobility.

Conclusion

The initiative by the SPD and Green Party in Hamburg highlights the importance of safeguarding the city’s pharmacy sector. By advocating for increased financial support, they aim to ensure the continued availability of these essential healthcare services and preserve the valuable role pharmacies play in the community. The Parliament’s decision on this proposal will have a significant impact on the future of pharmacy in Hamburg.
