Hamburg Bridge Closure: Major Traffic Disruption Expected for Key Intersection

Bridge Construction in Hamburg: Major Traffic Disruptions Expected

Hamburg, Germany – Starting this Saturday, a crucial traffic intersection in Hamburg will be completely closed for several days due to bridge construction work. The affected areas include Bürgerweide and Berlinertordamm, two essential thoroughfares connecting the city center with eastern Hamburg.

Closure Details

From February 15th to 25th, a massive crane will install 39 steel girders over Bürgerweide and the railway tracks, according to the city’s traffic authority.

  • Berlinertordamm will be closed from Saturday evening at 10:00 PM to Monday morning at 5:00 AM.
  • Bürgerweide will be closed until Tuesday morning at 5:00 AM.
  • Another multi-day closure of both routes will begin the following Thursday evening and Friday morning.
  • During the intervals between closures, Bürgerweide will have limited accessibility.

Public Transportation Impact

S-Bahn and long-distance train services will only be affected on the next two Sundays, from midnight until 4:00 AM on Mondays.

  • R8 line to Lübeck will be diverted.
  • RB 81 line between Hamburg and Bad Oldesloe will be replaced by buses between Hamburg’s central bus station (ZOB) and Ahrensburg.
  • Replacement buses will also be provided for S1 line (Wedel – Hamburg-Airport/Poppenbüttel) passengers between Berliner Tor and Hasselbrook.
  • Journeys from the main station to the airport will therefore take longer.

Pedestrians and Cyclists

Pedestrians and cyclists will experience minimal disruptions. The pedestrian and cycle path on the north side of Berlinertordammbrücke will only be closed briefly while the crane moves the girders.

Traffic Recommendations

The traffic authority anticipates significant traffic delays, particularly during rush hour. Drivers are advised to use the following alternative routes:

  • For motorists traveling from the southwest to the city center, take the A7.
  • Commuters from the south can also cross the Freihafenelbbrücke.
  • Those coming from eastern Hamburg should avoid the Neuen Elbbbrücken and instead use the A24 and Horner Kreisel.

Historical Significance and Project Scope

Berlinertordammbrücke connects the city center with eastern Hamburg. Parts of the bridge are approximately 100 years old and are scheduled for renovation until 2028. According to the traffic authority, this is the city’s largest inner-city bridge renewal project.
