Shiri Bibas’ Body Identified, Returned to Israel after Hamas’ Broken Promise
Jerusalem, Israel – On Saturday morning, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum Headquarters confirmed the positive identification of Shiri Bibas’ body, which was handed over to Israel by Hamas on Friday. Bibas’ remains were finally returned home, bringing closure to her heartbroken family.
A Promise Broken: Hamas’ Deception
Initially, Hamas had handed over the body of a Palestinian woman from Gaza on Thursday, falsely claiming it was Bibas. The deception was revealed when the Israeli military identified the remains of Bibas’ two sons, Ariel and Kfir Bibas, along with Oded Lifshitz. The coffin containing Bibas’ remains was subsequently transferred to Israel on Friday, and forensic identification confirmed her identity.
Hamas: No Interest in Withholding Bodies
Hamas has denied any intent to withhold bodies, claiming the dead hostages were killed by an Israeli airstrike in November 2023 and that the bodies may have been misidentified due to bombardments in the area.
Family’s Agony: A Mother’s Return
"Last night, our Shiri was returned home," Bibas’ family said in a statement, expressing their devastation and broken hearts. Despite their fears, they had hoped for a reunion, but now they faced the grim reality of her murder in captivity. Shiri, a devoted mother and loving partner, had been sadly taken from their lives.
Israeli Anger: Hamas to ‘Pay the Price’
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Hamas would bear the consequences for their alleged deception, stating they would "pay the full price."
Hope for the Remaining Hostages
Amidst their grief, the Bibas family appealed for the immediate return of the remaining hostages still held in Gaza, emphasizing the urgency of their repatriation. "There is no more important goal. There can be no rehabilitation without them," they said.
Calls for Rehabilitation
Israel and the international community continue to press for the release of all hostages held by Hamas, as well as the provision of vital rehabilitation services to support those who have endured the trauma of captivity and loss.
Legacy of a Mother: Shiri’s Memory
Shiri Bibas’ family remembered her as a "wonderful mother," "loving partner," and "amazing friend." Her memory serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict and the ongoing need for reconciliation and peace.
