Schleswig-Holstein Advancing North Sea Wind Farm Grid Connection Planning

Kiel, Germany – The planning process for connecting wind farms in the North Sea to the grid is progressing well in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. "Today, we have created planning permission for a further 45 kilometers of the climate neutrality grid," announced Minister of the Environment Tobias Goldschmidt (Greens) on Wednesday afternoon. The State Office for Energy Planning has approved the planning approval decision for the construction of the land section of the 600-kilovolt (kV) underground cable from the offshore landing point near Büsum (Dithmarschen district) to Büttel (Steinburg district).

"The North Sea is becoming a powerhouse for Europe," Goldschmidt said. The new line will better integrate the productive offshore wind energy into the power grid. "This will make the energy supply of all of Germany more secure, affordable, and independent."

From 2027/28, the line will transport North Sea wind power from the Nordlicht1 wind farm via a total of 235 kilometers of sea and land cables from a converter platform via Büsum to the grid connection point in Büttel.

Accelerating the Energy Transition

The expansion of the grid infrastructure is an essential component of Germany’s ambitious energy transition plans. By 2035, the country aims to generate 80% of its electricity from renewable sources, primarily wind and solar power. The offshore wind farms in the North Sea play a crucial role in achieving this goal.

"With the new grid connection, we are creating the conditions for further expanding offshore wind energy and making a significant contribution to climate protection," Goldschmidt emphasized. "We are working at full speed to make Schleswig-Holstein a leading region in the energy transition."

Benefits for the Region and Beyond

The grid connection project not only strengthens Schleswig-Holstein’s position as a renewable energy hub but also creates numerous economic benefits for the region. The construction and operation of the line will generate jobs and boost local businesses. Additionally, the increased energy security and affordability will benefit households and businesses throughout Germany.

Overcoming Obstacles

Despite the progress made, the project still faces some challenges. Environmental concerns and public objections must be addressed to ensure that the grid infrastructure is built in a sustainable and socially acceptable manner.

"We are aware of the concerns and are committed to involving all stakeholders in the planning process," Goldschmidt said. "Together, we want to find solutions that balance the need for a secure and affordable energy supply with the protection of our environment and the interests of local communities."

Conclusion

The grid connection planning for the North Sea wind farms is a major step towards achieving Germany’s energy transition goals. By integrating the abundant offshore wind energy resources into the power grid, Schleswig-Holstein is playing a leading role in creating a sustainable, secure, and affordable energy future for the country and Europe as a whole.
