Historical Challenges for Third-Party eBook Apps on iOS

Historically, third-party eBook apps on Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices have faced limitations regarding direct purchases within their applications. Apple’s App Store policies require paid content to be acquired through the platform, with Apple receiving a commission on each transaction. This restriction has hindered the ability of apps like Google Play Books to offer seamless in-app purchases.

Apple’s "Reader" App Exception

In recent times, Apple has introduced an exception to its rules for apps that primarily serve as content readers. This exception allows these apps to provide external links directing users to external websites for the purchase of content.

Google Play Books Embraces External Purchase Option

Google Play Books has taken advantage of this exception, enabling its iOS users to purchase eBooks directly from its app. Previously, the app only served as a viewer for eBooks purchased outside of the app, through the Google Play Books website.

How it Works

Google Play Books now features a "Get Book" button accanto to book listings. Upon tapping, users are presented with a "Finish getting your book" sheet explaining the following steps:

  1. Users are redirected to play.google.com/store/books/welcome.

  2. The App Store displays a system-level warning, informing users that they are leaving the app and proceeding to an external website.

  3. Users are taken to a "Pick up where you left off" site, showcasing their recent book listings.

  4. Users can select the desired book and complete the purchase using their Google Account on Google Play Store.

Limitations and Comparison with Netflix

This process is somewhat cumbersome compared to direct in-app purchases. However, it offers a more streamlined experience compared to the previous approach that required users to manually open a browser and search for the book on Google Play Store.

Netflix is another notable app that has adopted a similar approach. In July 2022, Netflix began allowing iOS users to view external links for subscription purchases, circumventing Apple’s commission on in-app purchases.

Conclusion

The introduction of external purchase support in Google Play Books for iOS is a significant development in the eBook industry. It provides users with greater flexibility to acquire content from the app directly. While it may not be as convenient as direct in-app purchases, it partially addresses the limitations imposed by Apple’s App Store policies.

As more apps embrace this approach, it remains to be seen how Apple will further adapt its guidelines to balance its revenue interests with the need to foster innovation and consumer choice within its ecosystem.
