Godzilla x Kong: Supernova – Will Space Be the Final Frontier?
The MonsterVerse is gearing up for another colossal clash, and the anticipation is reaching a fever pitch. Almost a year after initial murmurs, the upcoming third installment in the Godzilla x Kong saga has been officially christened "Supernova," slated for release in March 2027. This title has sparked fervent speculation among fans, leading to a popular theory: could the titans be facing a threat beyond Earth’s atmosphere?
The MonsterVerse has already demonstrated a willingness to delve into the depths of the planet, with both "Godzilla vs. Kong" and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" taking our beloved behemoths to the Hollow Earth. So, what’s the next logical step? The stars, of course! The title "Supernova" certainly hints at cosmic events, leading fans to believe that a space-faring villain is on the horizon.
One name that instantly springs to mind is SpaceGodzilla, the sinister clone of the King of the Monsters. This extraterrestrial abomination first graced the silver screen in 1994’s "Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla." His origin story is a wild ride: Godzilla’s genetic material drifted into space, merged with a crystalline organism, got sucked into a black hole, and then regurgitated by a white hole. The end result? A crystalline titan with the power to create and manipulate crystals, bent on destroying Godzilla and his adopted son, Little Godzilla.
SpaceGodzilla was ultimately vanquished by Godzilla’s potent red heat ray attack. Since his cinematic defeat, he has primarily existed in the realms of non-movie media, making appearances in video games and toy lines. His last fleeting moment on the big screen was as a mere toy in 2004’s "Godzilla: Final Wars." A more recent appearance was in the 2021 gacha game "Godzilla Battle Line" and as part of the franchise’s 40th-anniversary toy collection.
While SpaceGodzilla might not be considered an A-list adversary, his connection to the "Supernova" title is intriguing. His signature attack, the Corona Beam (or Void Invader, as it was known in a "Magic: The Gathering" expansion), has been compared to a cosmic explosion. The "Supernova" logo itself seems to lend credence to this theory, further fueling the speculation that SpaceGodzilla could be the next big bad.
However, SpaceGodzilla isn’t the only contender for the role of interstellar antagonist. Enter Gigan, the cyborg monster who made his debut in 1972’s "Godzilla vs. Gigan." Gigan is an alien creature that was converted into a cyborg by the Nebulans, a race of extraterrestrials seeking to conquer Earth. They intended to use Gigan to devastate the planet, paving the way for their eventual subjugation. Godzilla and Anguirus teamed up to defeat Gigan, but the cyborg monster returned in 1973’s "Godzilla vs. Megalon" as a supporting villain. He also appeared in 2004’s "Godzilla: Final Wars," where he was awakened and upgraded by the Xiliens, another alien race intent on destroying Earth.
Unfortunately for Gigan, he was defeated in both of his subsequent appearances. In "Final Wars," he met a particularly gruesome end, decapitating himself with his own weapon before a flaming Mothra delivered the final blow. Despite his recurring defeats, Gigan has maintained a more consistent presence in various multimedia formats compared to SpaceGodzilla. He’s been featured as a playable character in "GigaBash," appeared in the "Godzilla vs. Megalon" web video from 2023, and even starred in the short anime series "Chibi Godzilla Raids Again."
The introduction of another Godzilla-related enemy in "Supernova" would continue a trend that began with Mechagodzilla in "Godzilla vs. Kong." Despite Mechagodzilla serving as the primary antagonist in that film, both "Godzilla vs. Kong" and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" have primarily focused on expanding Kong’s world. Godzilla has often been relegated to the role of a special guest star, making impactful appearances in the opening and closing acts.
Now that Kong has a tribe of apes, a surrogate son, and a formidable weapon, he is well-established enough to share the spotlight. It’s time for Godzilla to reclaim center stage. His last significant character and mythology development occurred in 2019’s "King of the Monsters." If Godzilla and Kong are now a packaged deal, the MonsterVerse writers must provide them with equal opportunities to shine. Many fans would agree that it’s only fair for Godzilla to take the lead this time around.
Regardless of which monstrous adversary emerges as the primary threat, the release of "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova" on March 26, 2027, is a highly anticipated event. This film will likely push the boundaries of the MonsterVerse and potentially introduce new and exciting elements to the franchise. As more information becomes available, we will be sure to provide updates and analysis, keeping fans informed and engaged in the lead-up to this epic clash of titans. The possibilities are vast, and the future of the MonsterVerse looks brighter than ever. The question remains: will this "Supernova" be a harbinger of doom from the cosmos, or will Godzilla and Kong find a way to save the world once again? Only time will tell.
