Winter’s Last Stand: Slick Conditions Predicted for Southwestern Germany

Forecast Warnings of Icy Roads in Southern Regions

The German Weather Service (DWD) is urging motorists to exercise extreme caution as hazardous driving conditions are anticipated in southwestern Germany on Thursday morning. The threat of black ice looms large, particularly in the southern part of the state.

High Risk Areas: Valleys and Nebenstrecken

"The risk of black ice is greatest in the valleys of the Swabian Alb and the Black Forest," cautioned a DWD meteorologist. The most treacherous hours are expected to be between 5:00 AM and 9:00 AM, especially on secondary roads (Nebenstrecken).

Cold Ground, Warm Rain: A Recipe for Ice

The icy conditions are the result of a combination of factors. Rain is forecast to fall on Thursday morning south of Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, and Ulm. While warmer air is also moving into the region overnight, the ground remains cold after the recent spell of freezing temperatures. As a result, the rain is likely to freeze on contact, creating slick and dangerous road surfaces.

Relief by Noon, But Rain Persists

Fortunately, the icy conditions are not expected to persist beyond Thursday midday. However, rain is still predicted to fall throughout the entire region, and temperatures are projected to remain unseasonably warm.

Spring Interlude on Friday

A welcome respite from the wintry weather is in store for Friday when temperatures are expected to soar up to 18 degrees Celsius in Freiburg. "Friday will be the warmest day in a long time," stated the meteorologist.

Driver Safety Tips

Motorists are advised to take the following precautions to minimize the risks associated with driving in icy conditions:

  • Allow extra time for travel.
  • Reduce speed and increase following distance.
  • Avoid sudden braking or acceleration.
  • Be aware of shaded areas or bridges that may freeze first.
  • If possible, use public transportation or carpool.

Listen to Broadcast Updates

Regular weather updates and traffic bulletins will be broadcast throughout the region. Drivers are urged to pay attention to these reports for the latest information on road conditions.

Stay Informed, Stay Safe

By staying informed about the latest weather forecasts and heeding the advice of the authorities, drivers can help to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the roads of southwestern Germany during this potential period of treacherous conditions.
