Glatteis Risk in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia: DWD Issues Warning

Glatteisgefahr in Eastern Germany: DWD Issues Warnings

In the coming days, roads in the eastern German states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia could become treacherous due to slippery conditions. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued warnings for all three states, particularly for the morning and nighttime hours, where black ice caused by freezing rain or snowfall is expected.

Current Situation and Outlook for Saxony

In Saxony, the risk of black ice is still considered low today. With maximum temperatures reaching four degrees Celsius, rain is forecast for the afternoon, while higher elevations may experience snowfall. However, roads could become slippery during the night into Thursday due to freezing rain. In the mountainous regions, temperatures are expected to drop to minus two degrees Celsius, and around three centimeters of fresh snow is anticipated, according to the DWD.

Towards the end of the week, nighttime temperatures in Saxony could dip to minus seven degrees Celsius. However, aside from occasional snow showers, the weather is expected to remain dry. This will also reduce the risk of black ice formation. Otherwise, cloudy and rainy conditions are forecast throughout the region.

Warnings for Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia

The DWD has also issued warnings for Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, where black ice is expected to pose a significant hazard. In Saxony-Anhalt, freezing rain is expected on Thursday, particularly in the western and central parts of the state, while snowfall is forecast for the eastern and southern regions. Temperatures are predicted to fluctuate between zero and three degrees Celsius, creating ideal conditions for slippery conditions.

In Thuringia, freezing rain and snowfall are both expected, with temperatures hovering around zero degrees Celsius. The DWD has advised drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially during the morning and nighttime hours.

DWD Recommendations for Motorists

The DWD strongly advises motorists in all three states to be prepared for hazardous driving conditions. Drivers should slow down, increase their following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel, especially during the night when visibility is reduced. They should also be aware of the potential for sudden and unexpected slippery patches on the roads.

Pedestrians are also urged to take precautions, such as wearing appropriate footwear with good traction and being aware of potential hazards on sidewalks and walkways.
