Germany Rules Out Peacekeeping Troops in Ukraine for Now: Focus on Strengthening Ukrainian Army

Germany Rejects Premature Debate on Peacekeeping Troops in Ukraine

Despite international discussions, the German government maintains that it is premature to engage in debates about deploying peacekeeping troops to Ukraine or considering Germany’s potential involvement.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) emphasized the need to prioritize the establishment of a strong Ukrainian army, both during and after the conflict. He stated that the current focus should be on ensuring peace without undermining the sovereignty of the Ukrainian people.

"As long as there is war, there will be no European troops in Ukraine," Scholz asserted. "The questions regarding the future security architecture will be addressed when the time is right."

Vice government spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann echoed Scholz’s sentiments ahead of the Ukraine summit in Paris. She emphasized that the government deems the debate about peacekeeping troops to be premature, given the uncertain outcome of the conflict.

"We believe it is too early to discuss this at this point," Hoffmann said. "We must first wait to see if and how peace can be achieved for Ukraine."

Only after a peaceful resolution is reached can discussions begin on the potential shape and conditions of such a force, she added.

International Perspectives Diverge

Despite Germany’s reluctance, other countries have expressed their willingness to contribute to potential peacekeeping efforts. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated that his country could provide troops if necessary to support security guarantees for Ukraine. Sweden has also left open the option of sending troops.

Defense Ministry Stance

When asked about the Bundeswehr’s potential role in a Ukrainian peacekeeping operation, a spokesperson for the German Defense Ministry stated that Germany would not evade its responsibilities if the necessary conditions were met.

However, the spokesperson emphasized that discussions on specific contributions were premature.

"We first need to consider the initial steps before discussing individual contributions," the spokesperson said. "It is far too early for that."
