Nationwide Digital Radio Disruption Impacts Baden-Württemberg, Authorities Investigate

A widespread disruption affecting the digital radio network used by German authorities, including police, fire departments, and rescue services, has impacted Baden-Württemberg. The extent of the disruption in the state remains unclear, according to a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior in Stuttgart. The federal agency responsible for the digital radio network, the Federal Agency for Digital Radio for Security Authorities and Organizations (BDBOS), has launched an investigation to determine the cause and restore service as quickly as possible.

"The BDBOS and all partners are working with the highest priority to analyze the cause and resolve the disruption as quickly as possible," said a spokesperson for the agency.

Despite the digital radio outage, emergency services remain accessible to the public. Individuals needing to reach the police via the emergency number 110 or the fire department and rescue services via 112 can still call these numbers. These emergency lines operate on a separate system and were not affected by the disruption.

The digital radio network is primarily used for internal communication among police, fire, and rescue personnel. Due to the outage, these personnel have had to temporarily switch to alternative means of communication to coordinate their operations. This includes reliance on landline telephones, mobile phones using commercial networks, and in some cases, even traditional analog radio systems. The shift to alternative communication methods can introduce delays and complexities in coordinating responses, particularly in large-scale or complex emergency situations.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior confirmed the nationwide disruption to the German Press Agency (dpa) and stated that the extent and cause of the problem were still under investigation. Some states experienced more severe outages than others, while some areas were relatively unaffected.

The BDBOS emphasizes the importance of the so-called BOS radio system, which serves as the primary communication tool for police, fire departments, and rescue services. The BOS radio network consists of more than 5,000 base stations, covering 99.2 percent of Germany’s area.
