Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz Announces New Season Amid Leadership Transition

The Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz is set to embark on a new season, characterized by the motto "Für Dich haben wir immer einen Platz" (We always have a place for you). This upcoming season, however, marks a significant transition for the orchestra, as it will proceed without its current Intendant (General Manager), Beat Fehlmann. The announcement was made in Ludwigshafen, outlining an ambitious program encompassing 161 events across 30 venues both domestically and internationally.

Fehlmann revealed that the season will feature 91 in-house productions and 70 guest concerts. However, Fehlmann himself will not be a part of these performances as he is departing from the helm of the Bundesland’s largest symphony orchestra. He is slated to assume the leadership of the Musikakademie Liechtenstein in Vaduz, commencing on September 1, 2025.

The question of who will succeed Fehlmann at the Staatsphilharmonie remains a subject of keen interest. Katharina Binz (Green Party), the Minister of Culture, is expected to address the leadership succession plans on Thursday, May 8. Fehlmann, born in Switzerland in 1974, took over the directorship in 2018. His contract in Ludwigshafen was originally scheduled to run until 2028.

Despite the impending leadership change, the Staatsphilharmonie is forging ahead with a robust program for the 2024-2025 season. A prominent emphasis will be placed on musical education, with a total of 65 concerts designed for children and families. This commitment to fostering a love for music among young audiences underscores the orchestra’s dedication to its community and the future of classical music.

The Staatsphilharmonie has also announced an expansion of its artistic horizons. A significant development is the appointment of Julian Rachlin, a renowned musician, as the orchestra’s first-ever "Artistic Partner." Rachlin, who resides in Austria, will play a pivotal role throughout the season, participating in 15 concerts in various capacities. He will appear as a soloist, conductor, and artistic inspiration, contributing his unique perspective and talent to the orchestra’s performances. Rachlin’s involvement signifies a commitment to artistic innovation and collaboration.

This upcoming season marks the seventh jointly planned season for the existing leadership duo of the departing Intendant Fehlmann and Chief Conductor Michael Francis. Francis is scheduled to conduct 25 concerts, showcasing his artistry and expertise. He will be a prominent figure not only at the subscription concerts in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen but also in the partner cities stretching from Mainz to Wörth and from Kaiserslautern to Speyer. Francis’s presence across the region underscores the Staatsphilharmonie’s commitment to reaching diverse audiences throughout Rheinland-Pfalz.

The Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz also embraces its role as an ambassador for the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. The orchestra’s reputation extends beyond regional boundaries, as evidenced by planned guest performances in major European cities such as Milan and Frankfurt. These international appearances contribute to the orchestra’s global presence and help to promote the cultural heritage of Rheinland-Pfalz.

The orchestra is committed to providing music for all, regardless of their social class or background. The diverse program of concerts is meant to engage and enrich the lives of its audiences. They aim to make high-quality orchestral music accessible to a wide range of people.

The leadership transition represents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz. The departure of Beat Fehlmann marks the end of an era, but it also creates space for new ideas and approaches. The appointment of a new Intendant will be a crucial decision that will shape the future direction of the orchestra. The Staatsphilharmonie has made a considerable commitment to artistic excellence, educational initiatives, and community engagement. The challenge now lies in maintaining these strengths while embracing new opportunities for growth and innovation.

The planned season, despite the leadership change, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the orchestra’s musicians, staff, and artistic collaborators. The strong focus on education, the artistic partnership with Julian Rachlin, and the diverse program of concerts all point to a vibrant and engaging season.
The season’s slogan, "Für Dich haben wir immer einen Platz", reinforces the notion that the Staatsphilharmonie is there for everyone, no matter the event or occasion. The organisation also seeks to ensure a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for everyone who comes to their performances. The program has been designed to cater to a wide range of musical tastes, from classical masterpieces to contemporary compositions.
The departure of Beat Fehlmann will inevitably create a sense of change within the organisation. His contributions to the orchestra during his time as Intendant are undeniable. The new leadership will be entrusted with building on his successes and steering the orchestra towards a new chapter in its history.
The Staatsphilharmonie has always been committed to innovation and creativity. The appointment of Julian Rachlin as Artistic Partner shows that they are open to new ideas and approaches. The partnership is expected to bring new perspectives to the orchestra.
The Staatsphilharmonie looks forward to welcoming audiences back for another season of music. They aim to bring joy, inspire and create memorable moments for their listeners. The Staatsphilharmonie intends to continue to work hard and play its part in making Rheinland-Pfalz a place where music and culture can flourish.
