Wackerbarth spokesperson Martin Junge explained the urgency, stating that temperatures below freezing posed a significant threat, particularly to the young, vulnerable shoots that were emerging. These delicate growths are susceptible to frost damage, which can cause them to wither and die, ultimately leading to substantial yield losses.
“It was good that we were out and about in the vineyard this morning,” Junge remarked, emphasizing the importance of proactive intervention. He explained that the current weather conditions, characterized by localized ground frost and cloudless skies, were more akin to those experienced in previous years. The rapid temperature drop can cause these tender growths to turn brown and die, jeopardizing the potential harvest.
In the past, Wackerbarth had successfully employed frost candles and the creation of smoke cover to protect the vines from frost damage. These methods rely on generating heat and trapping it near the ground, creating a protective barrier against the freezing temperatures.
In Weinböhla, Wackerbarth’s winemakers deployed up to 550 of these frost candles around an eight-hectare area planted with Solaris, Muscaris, and Pinotin grape varieties. Junge described the mechanism, explaining that the candles work "like a chimney" to create air circulation between the rows of vines. This upward movement of warm air helps to draw away the cold air that settles near the ground, protecting the vulnerable shoots.
In the more remote locations of Diesbar-Seußlitz and Laubach, where there were no immediate residential neighbors, the team opted for Rauchfeuer – smoke fires – and small, controlled fires. These methods are effective in generating significant amounts of heat and smoke, creating a blanket of warmth that shields the vines from the cold.
The overall cost of these frost protection measures represents a significant investment for the winery, nearing a five-figure sum. However, Wackerbarth recognizes the critical importance of protecting the vines, as the potential losses from frost damage could far outweigh the cost of these preventative measures.
