French Interior Minister Threatens Sanctions Against Air Algérie Over Algerian Citizen’s Refusal of Entry
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has accused Algeria of violating international law by refusing to accept the return of one of its citizens deported from France and is considering sanctions against the national airline Air Algérie.
The incident involves a 30-year-old Algerian man who was sentenced in May by a French court to six months in prison and a territorial ban for theft, concealment, and carrying a knife. Upon completing his sentence, the man was escorted by police to a flight bound for Algeria on February 10-11.
However, Algerian authorities denied entry to the individual despite his possession of a valid identity card, claiming he lacked a consular laissez-passer. The man was promptly returned to France.
According to French judicial sources, Algeria’s decision to refuse entry contravenes bilateral agreements between the two countries. Until recently, Air Algérie only required consular laissez-passers for individuals without valid identity documents.
In a memo to his services, Minister Retailleau condemned Air Algérie’s "new and additional requirement" as a violation of existing accords. He further suggested that France may reconsider its own treaty obligations with Algeria.
"From the moment that Algeria does not respect the agreement with France and international law, why should we be obligated to respect the agreements with Algeria?" Retailleau said.
He also proposed a range of potential sanctions, including:
- Denying entry to certain Algerian officials and diplomats
- Revoking privileges currently enjoyed by Algerian authorities
- Reevaluating broader agreements between France and Algeria
Retailleau criticized France’s perceived weakness towards Algeria, calling for a more assertive stance.
