Columbia University Confrontation
Columbia University faced a significant disruption as over 100 masked anti-Israel agitators stormed the Butler Library during the crucial finals period. Interim President Claire Shipman responded decisively by calling in the New York Police Department (NYPD). The intervention led to the arrest of more than 80 individuals on campus. Adding another layer to the situation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is investigating the immigration statuses of those arrested. Any non-citizens involved could face deportation proceedings.
Dave Portnoy’s Auschwitz Offer Revoked
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy initially offered a controversial teachable moment to individuals allegedly responsible for posting an antisemitic sign at one of his company’s establishments. Portnoy’s initial proposition involved sending the individuals to Auschwitz, the notorious Nazi concentration camp in Poland, for an educational experience about the Holocaust. However, he later revoked this offer. Portnoy explained in a video that he decided against the trip after further consideration, citing concerns about the appropriateness and potential misinterpretations of such a gesture. The incident sparked debate about the best ways to address antisemitism and whether Portnoy’s initial proposal was a genuine attempt at education or a publicity stunt.
"I Like to Kill Jews" Allegation
A Columbia University student activist, Mohsen Mahdawi, who was recently released from ICE custody, is under scrutiny for alleged statements made in 2015. According to court documents submitted by federal authorities, Mahdawi allegedly told a gun shop owner, I like to kill Jews. This statement reportedly occurred during a visit to the gun store where Mahdawi inquired about various firearms. The FBI interviewed him regarding this statement. These allegations have added to the tensions surrounding campus activism and concerns about antisemitism.
University of Washington Protest
The University of Washington (UW) in Seattle experienced its own unrest as a group of anti-Israel protesters occupied a building on campus. Police in riot gear intervened, resulting in the arrest of at least 30 individuals. The protesters occupied an engineering building for several hours, demanding that the university divest from Boeing. Video footage from the scene showed dumpsters on fire as police worked to regain control of the building after demonstrators had barricaded themselves inside. The UW protest reflects a growing trend of campus activism related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and calls for universities to cut ties with companies that support Israel.
Eisenhower’s Great-Grandson on Holocaust Denial
Merrill Eisenhower Atwater, the great-grandson of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, warned that far too many people are either downplaying the severity of the Holocaust or denying it altogether. His remarks coincided with the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, a day of remembrance and reflection on the end of World War II and the defeat of Nazi Germany. Atwater’s comments serve as a reminder of the importance of Holocaust education and the need to combat historical revisionism and antisemitism.
Northeastern University Faculty Member’s Perspective
Max Abrahms, a faculty member at Northeastern University, shared his perspective on the changing campus climate. He noted that antisemitism was rampant following the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel, but the atmosphere has shifted since President Trump returned to the White House. Abrahms’ observation suggests that political factors and leadership changes can influence the prevalence of antisemitism on college campuses.
Quote of the Week
The newsletter featured a quote from Merrill Eisenhower Atwater: When you’re sitting with 80 Holocaust survivors and both you and they are crying because of how special the moment is—and they tell you, ‘Without your great-grandfather, this never would have happened’—I say, without your bravery, this never would have happened. This quote highlights the profound impact of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s leadership during World War II and the gratitude of Holocaust survivors for his role in their liberation.
