Florida Forms Immigration Enforcement Council with Local Law Enforcement Representation

Introduction

Four sheriffs in Florida have been appointed to a council advising the state’s newly established Board of Immigration Enforcement. This council, consisting of both police chiefs and sheriffs, will play a pivotal role in guiding the state’s efforts to enforce federal immigration laws.

Council Composition

The State Immigration Enforcement Council comprises four police chiefs and four sheriffs, who were selected by Governor Ron DeSantis. The sheriffs appointed to the council include:

  • Grady Judd, Polk County Sheriff
  • Bob Gualtieri, Pinellas County Sheriff
  • T.K. Waters, Jacksonville Sheriff
  • Bill Prummell, Charlotte County Sheriff

St. Cloud Police Chief Douglas Goerke has also been nominated to join the council. The remaining three police chiefs have yet to be appointed.

Legislative Mandate

The State Immigration Enforcement Council was created by Senate Bill 2C, which Governor DeSantis signed into law last Thursday. This bill aims to enhance the state’s collaboration with the Trump administration in enforcing federal immigration laws.

Council Responsibilities

The council is tasked with providing the Board of Immigration Enforcement with advice and recommendations on various matters related to immigration enforcement, including:

  • Requesting training and strategies from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to strengthen local law enforcement’s participation in ICE’s 287(g) program
  • Recommending financial assistance for local law enforcement agencies
  • Enhancing information sharing between local and state agencies and federal data centers
  • Exploring options for creating more detention beds for ICE

DeSantis’s Commitment

Governor DeSantis has emphasized Florida’s commitment to immigration enforcement and its support for the Trump administration’s efforts to address illegal immigration. He stated, "Florida is setting the standard for immigration enforcement and how states can help the Trump administration deliver on its promise to stop illegal immigration, deport illegal aliens, and keep American citizens safe."

Executive Director Appointment

Larry Keefe was nominated to serve as the board’s executive director by newly appointed Attorney General James Uthmeier. The board also includes DeSantis, Uthmeier, state Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, and Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson.

Local Officials’ Cooperation

The Cabinet passed two resolutions on Monday to ensure that all local officials comply with the state’s initiative to detain and deport illegal aliens. This move demonstrates the state’s commitment to enforcing federal immigration laws throughout all levels of government.

Conclusion

The establishment of the State Immigration Enforcement Council and the appointment of local law enforcement officials to its ranks signal Florida’s unwavering commitment to immigration enforcement. The council will play a crucial role in advising the board on strategies and recommendations to effectively combat illegal immigration and protect the safety of Florida residents.
