First TV Debate with Spitzenkandidaten: Reactions from Young Personalities

Generation Z Responds: An Unfiltered Take on the German TV Debate

As the German federal election draws near, the nation’s youth are eagerly tuning in to political discourse. In a unique gathering, ZEIT ONLINE has invited four young personalities to share their unvarnished reactions to the first TV debate featuring the Spitzenkandidaten—Olaf Scholz (SPD), Friedrich Merz (CDU), Robert Habeck (Grüne), and Alice Weidel (AfD).

The Participants

  • Langston Uibel: Actor
  • Ole Liebl: Author and content creator
  • Yorick Thiede: Comedian
  • Yasmine MBarek: ZEIT ONLINE editor

Olaf Scholz: Precision and Control

Langston Uibel commends Scholz for his composed and well-reasoned delivery. "He shows a level of maturity and sureness that instills a sense of confidence," Uibel observes. Yasmine MBarek agrees, noting Scholz’s strategic use of pauses and his ability to convey complex information clearly. "He seems to have a firm grasp of the issues and a clear vision for the future," she says.

Friedrich Merz: Traditionalist with a Modern Twist

Ole Liebl appreciates Merz’s traditional demeanor, which he believes resonates with many Germans. "He presents himself as the experienced and steady hand who will steer the country through troubled waters," Liebl says. Yorick Thiede, however, finds Merz’s style somewhat outdated. "He tries to appear jovial and approachable, but it comes across as forced and artificial," Thiede remarks.

Robert Habeck: Charisma and Passion

Yasmine MBarek praises Habeck’s natural charisma and his ability to connect with the audience. "He speaks with passion and conviction, which makes him both relatable and inspiring," she says. Langston Uibel echoes these sentiments, calling Habeck "the most authentic and engaging of the candidates."

Alice Weidel: Polarization and Provocation

Yorick Thiede finds Weidel’s aggressive approach off-putting. "She seems to relish controversy and is willing to say things that are simply not true. It’s like she’s trying to create a reaction rather than engage in a meaningful dialogue," he says. Ole Liebl agrees, describing Weidel’s tone as "argumentative and divisive."

Who Impresses Generation Z?

Despite their diverse perspectives, the young panelists agree that Habeck and Scholz are the standouts of the debate. Habeck’s charisma and authenticity resonate with their generation, while Scholz’s competence and composure inspire confidence.

"Habeck’s ability to articulate his vision and connect with voters is impressive," says Yasmine MBarek. "He seems to genuinely care about the future of the country and is willing to fight for what he believes in."

Langston Uibel adds, "Scholz is the pragmatic choice. He has the experience and the steady hand that Germany needs to navigate the challenges ahead."

Final Verdict

While the Spitzenkandidaten presented varying approaches and ideologies, Generation Z ultimately tends to favor candidates who demonstrate authenticity, competence, and a genuine concern for the future. Habeck and Scholz emerge as the leaders in this regard, with Habeck’s charisma and Scholz’s precision capturing the attention and respect of young voters.
