Harvey Fierstein Alleges Shows Banned from Kennedy Center Following Trump’s Involvement; Kennedy Center Disputes Claim

The renowned playwright and actor Harvey Fierstein has ignited a controversy by alleging that his productions have been effectively banned from the Kennedy Center following former President Donald Trump’s recent influence over the esteemed performing arts venue. Fierstein, a celebrated figure in both film and Broadway, with four Tony Awards to his name, has a long history of his works being staged at the Kennedy Center.

The crux of Fierstein’s claim stems from Trump’s actions in January, where he dismissed several members of the Kennedy Center’s Board of Trustees and subsequently announced his own election as board chair, purportedly by the newly appointed board members. Fierstein asserts that this change in leadership has resulted in his shows no longer being welcomed at the institution.

Fierstein voiced his concerns in a passionate Instagram post, stating, "A few folks have written to ask how I feel about Trump’s takeover of The Kennedy Center. How do you think I feel? The shows I’ve written are now banned from being performed in our premiere American theater." He went on to list several of his notable works, including "Kinky Boots," "La Cage aux Folles," "Torch Song Trilogy," "Hairspray," "Safe Sex," "Casa Valentina," "Spookhouse," "A Catered Affair," "The Sissy Duckling," and "Bella Bella," many of which have been performed at the Kennedy Center in the past.

The playwright further emphasized his longstanding commitment to civil rights advocacy, lamenting that his efforts were being undermined by a figure he believes is prioritizing political maneuvering over genuine progress. "I have been in the struggle for our civil rights for more than 50 years only to watch them snatched away by a man who actually couldn’t care less," Fierstein wrote, adding, "He does this stuff only to placate the religious right so they’ll look the other way as he savages our political system for his own glorification."

Fierstein went on to accuse Trump of attacking fundamental freedoms, stating, "He attacks free speech. He attacks the free press. He attacks America’s allies. His only allegiance is to himself – the golden calf. My fellow Americans I warn you – this is NOT how it begins. This is how freedom ENDS!" He concluded his post with a fervent call to action, urging people to resist what he perceives as a dangerous trend. "Trump may have declared ‘woke’ as dead in America. We must prove him wrong. WAKE THE HELL UP!!!!!"

However, Fierstein’s claims have been met with strong rebuttals from within the Kennedy Center. Richard Grenell, the interim Executive Director, took to social media platform X to refute Fierstein’s allegations, labeling them as "a total lie." Grenell also suggested that Fierstein’s information was based on misinformation and urged him to hold those responsible accountable. "Whoever told you this (because you obviously didn’t do your own research) should be fired from your team for purposefully making you look foolish," Grenell wrote.

Adding another layer to the controversy, Grenell highlighted his own history of advocating for equality, noting his service as the first openly gay U.S. Cabinet official during the Trump administration, as the acting Director of National Intelligence.

The controversy surrounding the Kennedy Center has prompted reactions from other prominent figures in the arts community. Actress Issa Rae has reportedly canceled her shows at the venue, and celebrities such as "Grey’s Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes and musician Ben Folds have resigned from their positions at the center.

The producers of the Broadway hit "Hamilton" have also withdrawn from a planned engagement at the Kennedy Center next year. Producer Jeffrey Seller explained the decision, stating, "Our show simply cannot, in good conscience, participate and be a part of this new culture that is being imposed on the Kennedy Center."

Despite the controversy, Grenell has maintained that his goal is to revitalize the Kennedy Center and make it a welcoming space for all. "The Kennedy Center is the premier arts institution in the United States," Grenell told Fox News Digital. "It deserves to have the public’s full support and a balance sheet that is solid." He has also emphasized his commitment to encouraging Republican attendance and ensuring that everyone feels welcome at the venue.

The conflicting accounts and reactions surrounding the situation at the Kennedy Center have created a complex and highly charged atmosphere. Fierstein’s accusations raise concerns about artistic freedom and the potential impact of political influence on cultural institutions. Grenell’s denials and assurances aim to reassure the public and maintain the Kennedy Center’s reputation as a premier arts destination.

As the debate continues, the future of the Kennedy Center remains uncertain. The controversy highlights the challenges of navigating the intersection of art, politics, and social values in a polarized society. Whether the Kennedy Center can overcome these challenges and maintain its role as a leading cultural institution remains to be seen.
