Mullin Defends Fetterman, Suggests Democratic Discontent Stems from Policy Divergence

Senator Markwayne Mullin, a Republican from Oklahoma and a contemporary of Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, has weighed in on the recent media scrutiny surrounding Fetterman’s health and political stance. Mullin posits that the increased attention might be linked to Fetterman’s evolving political positions and his divergence from the left wing of the Democratic Party, rather than any significant deterioration in his cognitive abilities.

Mullin, speaking to Fox News Digital, stated that his interactions with Fetterman have been constructive and that he has observed improvement in Fetterman’s condition since his 2022 campaign against Dr. Mehmet Oz. While acknowledging that he is not a medical professional, Mullin emphasized that he would not violate HIPAA laws by speculating on Fetterman’s health.

Mullin framed the situation as a consequence of Democratic Party politics, suggesting that the party’s reaction to dissent is often harsh. "It is kind of funny because the way the Democrats act is if you dont agree with them on all their points, they want to wipe you off the face of the earth," Mullin said.

He drew attention to Fetterman’s past as a progressive icon, noting his support from democratic socialist Senator Bernie Sanders. Mullin argued that Fetterman’s subsequent stances on issues like Israel and Iran led to a decline in support from the left-wing populist base.

Mullin stated that Fetterman’s independent streak and willingness to speak his mind are unsettling to the Democratic Party establishment, which he characterized as control-oriented. He argues that differing from the party line is seen as a cardinal sin.

Mullin highlighted that Fetterman’s health was not a significant concern for Democrats when he was running against Oz, despite perceived cognitive challenges. He referenced an instance during a debate where Fetterman’s opening statement was "Hi – good night, everybody," which drew criticism at the time.

Mullin asserted that Fetterman’s health seemed worse during the campaign than it does now. He commended Fetterman for standing his ground and for remaining true to himself, despite the political pressures.

Mullin attributes the negative press surrounding Fetterman to a coordinated effort by Democrats to undermine him, asserting that they are known to "eat their own." He expressed support for Fetterman’s authenticity, citing his unique style and personal story.

Mullin also addressed the reported disagreements between Fetterman and his staff, reminding them that Fetterman is the elected official and that they are free to seek employment elsewhere if they disagree with his decisions, even those as simple as meeting with former President Donald Trump. He dismissed their objections as insignificant, stating, "So they can go pound sand."

Other Democratic senators offered varying perspectives on Fetterman. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon told Fox News Digital that Fetterman "comes to play every day." He noted that he works with Fetterman regularly, particularly on hunger programs and technology to protect the hungry and taxpayers.

Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, when approached by Fox News Digital, briefly paused while on his phone, but declined to comment on the Fetterman story, stating that he had to leave.

Fox News Digital’s request for comment from New York Magazine was not returned.

Mullin’s defense of Fetterman underscores the complex dynamics at play within the Democratic Party and the potential consequences for those who deviate from established ideological boundaries. His remarks highlight the tension between party loyalty and individual expression, and the challenges faced by politicians who seek to forge their own paths. The situation also draws attention to the media’s role in shaping narratives surrounding political figures and the potential influence of partisan agendas.
