FC Heidenheim’s Schmidt Hails Conference League Victory as Step in Right Direction
Following a frustrating run of form, 1. FC Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt hailed their 2-1 victory in the first leg of the Conference League playoff against FC Copenhagen as a "small step in the right direction."
Despite trailing at half-time, the relegation-threatened Bundesliga side showed their resilience to secure the win. Rising star Paul Wanner expressed his hope that the victory would also provide a boost for their upcoming Bundesliga clash with FSV Mainz 05 on Sunday.
"We can be just as courageous this weekend and I believe this win gives us the positive energy we need," said Wanner. "I believe we can get something."
Prior to their triumph at Parken Stadium, Heidenheim had only won three games since the end of October, including their spirited victory in the Danish capital. The outcome was all the more crucial as it gives them a strong position heading into the second leg next Thursday.
"The players also take these setbacks home with them," said Schmidt, who made 10 changes to his starting lineup. "I can imagine that the mood there was similar to mine at times, where my wife really had to put up with me."
"This will do everyone good. But again, it’s just one game, we’ve only played one half and our full focus is now on Mainz."
Schmidt’s Positive Outlook Despite Relegation Threat
Heidenheim currently sits in the relegation playoff spot in the Bundesliga standings. However, Schmidt remains optimistic about their chances of survival.
"We’ve shown that we can play with the best teams. We need to continue to believe in ourselves and work hard every day," said Schmidt. "I have full confidence in this team, and I believe we can stay in the Bundesliga."
Schmidt has been praised for his tactical acumen and ability to get the best out of his players. He will need to use all his experience and skill to guide Heidenheim to safety.
Wanner’s Rising Star
Wanner has been one of the standout performers for Heidenheim this season. The 17-year-old midfielder has already made 15 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing one assist.
Wanner’s performances have earned him praise from his coach and teammates alike. He is expected to play a key role in Heidenheim’s bid to avoid relegation.
Heidenheim’s Crucial Mainz Clash
Heidenheim will be looking to build on their Conference League victory when they host Mainz on Sunday. The match is a must-win for both teams, who are battling to avoid the drop.
Mainz is currently in 16th place, just one point above Heidenheim. However, they have lost their last three Bundesliga games and are in desperate need of a positive result.
A victory for Heidenheim would give them a major boost in their fight for survival. It would also provide Schmidt with the perfect opportunity to show that his team is capable of mixing it with the best.
