The French Public’s Adoration of Agriculturists: A Profound Shift in Perception

On the brink of the renowned Salon de l’Agriculture, an agricultural exhibition held annually in Paris, it is befitting to spotlight one of the most esteemed professions in the eyes of the French: farmers.

A recent nationwide survey conducted by Odoxa-Backbone Consulting for Le Figaro revealed the profound admiration held by the French public for agriculturists. Alongside doctors, nurses, police officers, and military personnel, farmers have ascended to the pantheon of respected professionals. An overwhelming 9 out of 10 French citizens expressed a favorable opinion of this occupation, regardless of their political leanings.

This adoration is not mere lip service. Farmers are widely hailed for their unparalleled courage (95%), their indispensable service to society (95%), and their unwavering passion for their work (91%). Notably, the recent wave of protests and the ongoing health crisis have further burnished the image of agriculturists in comparison to merely five years ago.

In the eyes of the public, farmers have become more "likeable" (85%, an increase of 8 percentage points), more "connected with the people" (79%, a rise of 9 percentage points), while simultaneously being perceived as less "grumbling" (51%, a decrease of 2 percentage points) and notably less "polluting" (34%, a remarkable drop of 10 percentage points).

This seismic shift in perception is a testament to the resilience, adaptability, and dedication of French farmers. They have weathered economic storms, environmental challenges, and social unrest with unwavering resolve. Their unwavering commitment to providing sustenance for the nation, even in the face of adversity, has not gone unnoticed.

The public’s recognition of the importance of agriculture is also a reflection of growing awareness about the environmental and social challenges facing this vital sector. The realization that food production is not merely a commercial enterprise but a fundamental pillar of society has taken root in the French consciousness.

Farmers are no longer viewed as mere land tillers or livestock breeders. They are recognized as custodians of the environment, protectors of biodiversity, and guardians of rural traditions. Their role in shaping the French landscape and preserving its natural heritage is deeply appreciated.

The outpouring of support for farmers is not just a passing fancy. It is a reflection of a profound shift in the French public’s understanding of the essential role that agriculture plays in their lives. Farmers are no longer the unseen laborers providing sustenance from afar; they are valued members of the community, whose contributions to society extend far beyond the farm gate.

As the Salon de l’Agriculture opens its doors once again, it provides an opportunity to celebrate the vital role of farmers in French society. It is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support they receive from the public.
