Rheinland-Pfalz Funds Fan Projects for Violence Prevention in Football

The German state of Rheinland-Pfalz is providing financial support to three fan projects dedicated to preventing violence in football. The projects, which will receive a total of 178,000 euros, aim to bridge the gap between fans, clubs, and security authorities while also offering valuable social work.

Projects Supported

  • Fanprojekt Mainz e.V.: Will receive 80,000 euros.
  • Fanprojekt Kaiserslautern: Will receive 51,000 euros.
  • Fanprojekt Trier: Will receive 47,000 euros.

Objectives and Activities

The fan projects play a crucial role in de-escalating tense situations and preventing violence in the football environment. Their activities include:

  • Accompanying fans: Project staff accompany fans on bus and train journeys to matches, serving as contact persons and intervening to de-escalate situations if necessary.
  • School visits: The projects visit schools to promote a focus on the enjoyment of the game rather than rivalry among fans.
  • Counseling and support: The projects provide confidential counseling and support to fans, both on and off the pitch.

Importance of Fan Projects

Interior Minister Michael Ebling (SPD) emphasized the significance of these projects: "Fan projects are a vital link between fans, clubs, and security authorities. They perform valuable social work and contribute significantly to de-escalation and violence prevention in the football environment."

National Concept for Sport and Security

The funding for the fan projects is part of the national concept for sport and security, which recognizes the importance of addressing violence and discrimination in sports. By supporting these initiatives, the government aims to promote a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all football enthusiasts.

Positive Impact

The fan projects have a proven track record in reducing violence and fostering positive relationships within the football community. They provide a platform for dialogue, conflict resolution, and social integration.

Looking Ahead

The funding from Rheinland-Pfalz will enable the fan projects to continue their valuable work in promoting a violence-free football culture. By investing in these initiatives, the government is demonstrating its commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable environment for fans and stakeholders alike.

Additional Benefits

In addition to their primary mission of violence prevention, the fan projects also offer a range of other benefits to their communities:

  • Promoting social inclusion: They provide a safe space for marginalized youth and young adults, encouraging them to engage in positive activities.
  • Strengthening community bonds: The projects foster a sense of belonging and connection among fans, clubs, and the wider community.
  • Promoting fair play and sportsmanship: They educate fans about the importance of respecting opponents and playing by the rules.
