Special Envoy to London
The case for the return of the French Grand Prix to the Formula 1 World Championship is currently at a standstill, even though there are some positive signs with the arrival of luxury giant LVMH as a sponsor of the World Championship. Flavio Briatore, appointed Executive Consultant of the Alpine team, is keen for the discipline to return to France. But not just anywhere.
"The French Grand Prix is missing from the Formula 1 calendar," insisted the Italian before ruling out: "But not at Magny-Cours (Nièvre, Editor’s note) where there is almost nothing," as was the case between 1991 and 2008. The solution of a return to the Var at the Castellet circuit where the 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 editions took place does not seem to enchant the 74-year-old Italian either, present in London for the presentation of the 2025 single-seater, the A525, in the company of the entire French team. "At Castellet, it’s impossible with the traffic problems," he simply said…
France, a demanding market
Flavio Briatore is keen to see Formula 1 return to France, but on condition that the event meets certain criteria. First of all, the circuit must be of high quality and able to accommodate a large number of spectators. The infrastructure must also be up to scratch, with easy access and ample parking. Finally, the location must be attractive, with a strong tourist appeal.
Several cities interested
Several French cities have expressed their interest in hosting the French Grand Prix. Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Nice are among the candidates. Each of these cities has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Paris is the most prestigious city in France, but it would be difficult to find a suitable circuit that meets all the criteria. Lyon is also a major city, but it is not as well known internationally as Paris. Marseille and Nice are both located on the coast, which would be an advantage in terms of tourism. However, the infrastructure in these two cities is not as good as in Paris or Lyon.
The decision will be made by the FIA
The decision on which city will host the French Grand Prix will be made by the FIA, the governing body of world motorsport. The FIA will take into account a number of factors when making its decision, including the quality of the circuit, the infrastructure, the attractiveness of the location and the financial guarantees offered by the city.
The return of the French Grand Prix is a long-term project
The return of the French Grand Prix is a long-term project. It will take several years to find a suitable circuit, build the infrastructure and organize the event. However, Flavio Briatore is confident that the French Grand Prix will return to the calendar sooner rather than later.
"France is a major country with a strong tradition in motorsport," said Briatore. "I am sure that we will be able to find a solution that will satisfy everyone."
