Former World Champion Markus Baur to Lead HG Saarlouis as New Sporting Director

Former German handball star Markus Baur has been appointed as the new sporting director of HG Saarlouis, a third-division club, from the summer of 2024 onwards. The 54-year-old, who was previously the coach of Bundesliga club FA Göppingen until June 2024, will bring his expertise from 228 international appearances to the Saarland club with the aim of guiding them into the second division in the medium term.

"I’m incredibly excited about this new challenge," said Baur, who captained Germany to victory at the 2007 World Championships under coach Heiner Brand.

In Saarlouis, Baur will be responsible for squad planning and developing the club’s sporting concepts. His goal is to "build something from the ground up, with patience and a clear vision, that will take us back to the Bundesliga in the near future."

Baur is a former playmaker and attacking midfielder who has a wealth of experience at both club and international level. He spent two years as coach of TVB Stuttgart until 2018 and was most recently in charge of Göppingen from November 2022 to June 2024. He has also served as a youth international coach for the German Handball Federation (DHB).
