Frankfurt (Oder) Mayor Urges European Unity at Munich Security Conference
Frankfurt (Oder), Germany – Frankfurt (Oder) Mayor René Wilke will participate in a discussion on security policy and its implications for municipalities at the Munich Security Conference. His key message: Europe must continue to prioritize close cooperation and avoid divisions.
"The European twin city of Frankfurt/Slubice plays a unique role at a time when Europe is increasingly drifting apart," Wilke, an independent politician, told the German Press Agency. "In the current global climate, Europe’s only chance is to avoid isolation."
"We are a counter-model because we prioritize cooperation with Slubice," Wilke emphasized. The Oder city of Frankfurt and the Polish city of Slubice are separated only by the Oder River and are closely intertwined. "We live in a place where it becomes vividly clear that we are worse off when we work against each other."
Wilke has been invited to a discussion panel at the Amerikahaus in Munich on the evening of the conference, which is organized in cooperation with the Munich Security Conference and focuses on foreign and security policy events. The "Märkische Oderzeitung" newspaper previously reported on the Frankfurt mayor’s participation.
The Munich Security Conference will take place from Friday to Sunday. Expected attendees include US Vice President J.D. Vance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg.
Wilke’s Appeal: European Unity Essential for Security and Prosperity
In his address at the conference, Wilke will reiterate his firm belief that European unity is not only desirable but essential for security and prosperity. He will emphasize that the current geopolitical challenges, including the war in Ukraine, the rise of authoritarian regimes, and climate change, can only be effectively addressed through collective action.
Wilke will argue that Europe must focus on building bridges rather than erecting walls, both within and beyond its borders. He will call for enhanced cooperation on defense, energy, trade, and migration, as well as increased investment in education and research to foster a shared European identity.
Frankfurt/Slubice: A Model for European Cooperation
Wilke will highlight Frankfurt/Slubice as a successful example of how cooperation can overcome divisions and bring tangible benefits to both sides. The two cities have implemented numerous joint projects in areas such as infrastructure, culture, and education, creating a vibrant cross-border community.
Wilke will also address the importance of civil society and citizen engagement in promoting European cooperation. He will call on municipalities and civic organizations to take an active role in building bridges between different cultures and perspectives.
